EDIT: “Following the recommendations of governmental agencies, the decision has been taken to postpone the Nuart Aberdeen festival until further notice. The safety of the public, our artists, crew, and partners is our utmost priority and we will work closely with our Nuart partners in Stavanger and Aberdeen City Council to rearrange this world-class event.” – Nuart Aberdeen
Longer days and warmer temperatures among other things mean that Nuart Aberdeen is about to take place once again in Scotland’s Granite City. For the fourth consecutive year, the creative force behind Nuart Festival (teamed up with their local partners Aberdeen Inspired and the Aberdeen City Council) will challenge the cultural narrative of the city otherwise most popular for its uniformed Victorian-era architecture and grey granite.
After a successful three years, production of a series of groundbreaking public murals, installations, and intervention, and overwhelming support of the local community, the festival recently announced that the councilors have backed another three years of funding, with locations to be expanded across the city. True to their initial concept to present the most interesting and relevant Street Art of its time, festival director and lead curator Martyn Reed created a stirring lineup that warrants another great assortment of large public paintings, thought-provoking creations, as well as clever and playful urban intrusions. Along with the main mission to provide an internationally relevant, challenging and dynamic environment for artists, curators, producers, scholars and public alike, Nuart Aberdeen 2020 is hoping to activate and inspire an emergent local scene through their activity. This is done not only by introducing works by artists that come from different backgrounds, from studio painters, over social or environmental activists, to urban provocateurs, through a program of talks, presentations, film screenings, free guided walking tours, and workshops.
This year’s participating artists include Biancoshock (IT), ICY & SOT (IR), Jacoba Niepoort (DK), Jofre Oliveras (ES), Marina Zumi (AR), Nuno Viegas (PT), Paul Harfleet (UK), Pejac (ES), Sandra Chevrier (CA), Vladimir Abikh (RU), and special guest Martha Cooper (US).
