Thursday night, Ryan McGinley opened his latest body or work “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere” at SOHO’s Team Gallery. This homecoming show for the young and talented photographer was jammed packed from the opening moments – it almost seemed that every other attendee in the dense crowd was a friend or acquaintance of the renowned photographer. Ryan was very gracious as he took time to greet every fan that approached him.
As we noted in our first preview, this body of work is a departure from Ryan’s signature depictions of youth in the boundless outdoor environs of America. This unique set of work focuses on 150 hand-picked subjects from across the world in an intimate portrait sitting with the photographer in his Manhattan studio. The black and white portraits were each the result of gleaning through thousands of shots for each of the subjects. Ryan’s meticulous attention to detail and discerning eye selected a defining/revealing moment for each person which is reflected in each of the beautiful 12×18 portraits.
Take a look after the jump as AM surfed the shoulder to shoulder room to catch the opening night action.
As hinted in our second preview, the 1500+ Facebook RSVPs and others quickly overflowed the gallery space as passerbys questioned “what are they giving away?” The initial lines quickly dissolved into a blob that stopped traffic along Grand Ave. Eventually, the fire Marshall came along to halt the grind of fans coming and exiting the gallery and closed the show 30 mins early. But fear not if you didn’t get a chance to see this body of works as it will be up all month and will last until April 17th.
