We’re suckers for a great idea and also impatient when it comes to waiting for the delivery guys. So after posting about the KAWS x Standard Light Bulb Set, we headed to The Standard NY to cop this hot collaboration. Last night, Toronto-based artist Ray Caesar’s “A Gentle Kind of Cruelty” premiered in New York at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new body of work, which seems to have a more personal meaning this time around, features Caesar’s signature use of 3D modeling and animation programs where he painstakingly builds up his porcelain-skinned female characters and stages them in detailed environments. AM favorite Fuco Ueda has been off US soil for a while now, but she has still been producing exquisite artwork. Moving into a new gallery space in Chelsea, Freight + Volume brought together a fresh group show to christen in the new year. With art from Damian Stamer, Doug Fishbone, Tatiana Berg, Kristen Schiele (interviewed) and Eric White (interviewed), the exhibition gave us good vibes and even better visuals from classically painted works to unique video installations. Openings: Hiroyuki Doi @ Ricco Maresca

AM caught an interesting show at Ricco Maresca gallery in Chelsea, where there was an exhibition of new works by Japanese artist Hiroyuki Doi. The pieces Hiroyuki produces utilizes a simple technique of using ink to create various-sized circles on traditional Japanese “washi” paper. The numerous circles together form images that can be interpreted as the cosmos, souls or human cells. It’s very refreshing to see a simplistic technique be utilized to create moving compositions.
