Openings: Dan Quintana – “Diffused” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Over the weekend, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco hosted the opening of Dan Quintana’s lastest solo show. Entitled Diffused, the exhibition featured a dozen new oil paintings and several charcoal drawings on paper from the Los-Angeles based artist centered mainly around his ghostly portraiture, beautiful female characters surrounded by an aura of abstract elements. Rounding out the show was a large one off rug designed by Quintana with his imagery in mind. Photo credit: Odell Hussey. Discuss this show here. Discuss Dan Quintana here.

Streets: Deih – UpNorth Festival (Norway)

After introducing you to the work of Deih back in July, we now have another wall from him to share with you from the UpNorth Festival. The Spanish artist once again used wide range of colors to render out more of his comic-inspired characters that seem to be taken out of a fantasy or science fiction novel. The event held in the small village of Sulitjelma in Northern Norway takes advantage of the large abandoned factories after mining companies left the area. Curated and organized by anonymous Norwegian artist Stein […]

Upcoming: Tessar Lo – “No More Doubts, No More Fears” @ Project Gallery (Toronto)

Starting on September 10th, Tessar Lo (featured) will be presenting what he describes as one of his dream shows at Project Gallery (Toronto). Entitled No More Doubts, No More Fears, the work for the exhibition will be made as he lives in the gallery from the opening until the 30th. He hopes to deal with “ideas of immigration, nesting and establishment, and the development of identity that occurs within the combination of one’s geography and cognitive state” with the new body of work. Discuss Tessar Lo here.

Upcoming: Tauba Auerbach & Mark Fox @ Wisch Family Gallery (Stanford University)

On September 9th, Constructive Interference: Tauba Auerbach and Mark Fox will be opening at the Wisch Family Gallery at Stanford University. On loan from the Anderson family, the works from the mid-career contemporary artists who both graduated from the university will “explore ideas of process, material manipulation and chance” and encompass prints, paintings (one of Auerbach’s iconic fold paintings seen above), and sculpture. Discuss Tauba Auerbach here.

Openings: Cleon Peterson – “Poison” @ Library Street Collective

Over the weekend, the Library Street Collective hosted the opening for a new show from Cleon Peterson in Detroit. Poison features new paintings featuring nightmarish scenes of violence and gore, nothing new to fans of the former assistant to Shepard Fairey. What is new though are the sculptural editions that Peterson has included in the new body of work, a natural next step to bringing his provocative imagery to life. Photo credit: Sal Rodriguez. Upcoming: “Takashi Murakami’s Superflat Collection” @ Yokohama Museum of Art

Just like his friend KAWS, fellow artist Takashi Murakami will be putting part of his collection on display – scheduled for early next year at the Yokohama Museum of Art in Japan. His eclectic taste in art will be evident to visitors as works from from Shohaku and Rosanjin to Anselm Kiefer will be shown. You can read more about Murakami’s journey as a collector here including his surprising admiration for Kiefer. Photo credit: Kentaro Hirao (via The Art Newspaper). Discuss Takashi Murakami here.

Previews: Jin Young Yu – “Myself / Them” @ Art Merge Lab

Coming up on September 19th, fans in Los Angeles will have a rare opportunity to see a selection of works from Jin Young Yu (interviewed) stateside at Art Merge Lab, a popup project in Downtown LA. Utilizing her signature technique of working with transparent plastic, the Korean artist creates life-size individuals (sometimes including their families and pets) while playing with ideas of identity and the tensions between our outward appearances and how we really feel inside. While this was the focus of her Me & Myself series of works, attendees […]

You may recall our previous coverage of the annual Forest For The Trees mural festival in Portland (see 2013, 2014). If you are anywhere in the area, head over to show your support (locations here) or you can follow the progress […]

Releases / Signings: Kelsey Brookes – “Psychedelic Space” Book @ Quint Gallery

Psychedelic Space is the soon to be released book from Kelsey Brookes from Gingko Press that explores his last three years of work. The 216 page hardcover documents his more recent paintings, spanning four solo shows, the explosive patterns that are his artistic vision of molecular structures of the psychedelic nature. The monograph has some interesting additions like “gatefold spreads, a sticker sheet, and a clear molecular overlay on his stunning “LSD” piece, along with a booklet bound within and glow-in-the-dark cover text.” To mark this […]
