Streets: Jeff Soto x Maxx242 (Riverside) – Part II

After stopping by to check in on the progress of the joint mural between Jeff Soto (interviewed) and Maxx242 in Riverside, we dropped by a couple days ago to see the finished two-wall piece. The long time friends, collaborators (see Berlin & Luxembourg), and artists who have spent most of their lives in the area hope that this new mural will be the beginning of a new renaissance for public art in this part of Southern California. On May 1st, the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver will be hosting a new body or work from Paul Jacobsen entitled Outpost. For his second show with the gallery, the locally-based artist will put forth a new series of still life paintings produced with classical techniques but with a non-typical subject matter. On May 15th, a colossal sculptural work from KAWS will be unveiled at Piazza of Shanghai Times Square. With the annual event in Hawaii expanding into SXSW this year and Taiwan last year, the POW! WOW! festival will finally hit the west coast on June 21-28. POW! WOW! Long Beach will feature a week of exhibitions, film screenings, talks and of course public murals. Participating in the street art will be Aaron De La Cruz, Benjie Escobar, Cryptik, Fafi, Hueman, James Jean, Jeff McMillan, Jeff Soto, Low Bros, Madsteez, Nychos, Push, and Tristan Eaton. Like they have in the past (see Berlin & Luxembourg), Jeff Soto (interviewed) and Maxx242 are collaborating on a new mural in Riverside, California. The two friends and former studio mates go way back, even painting a wall together 25 years ago. A year in the making, the two are finally able to go big again in their hometown. Tonight in London (April 24), the Endangered Species group exhibition opens to the public at Mya Gallery where 20 artists were challenged to depict one species under the threat of extinction. On the cover of this month’s New York Times Magazine is a special project prepared by JR (interviewed) for their Walking New York issue. Focused on the issue of immigration as of late, the famous street artist decided to photograph recent immigrants walking down the streets of Nolita and in turn pasting their images on city streets, where they are often invisible despite there being approximately 3.1 million of them in NYC. Artists Bäst, Paul Insect, and Rostarr have recently collaborated with a new fashion label, Cocurata, on their inaugural collection. Coming up on May 21st, Joram Roukes will be opening a solo at StolenSpace in London witha new body of work entitled The Great Beyond. The fresh series of surreal oil paintings explores ideas of exploration and escapism, perhaps inspired by the move by the Dutch artist from the Netherlands to Los Angeles in 2013. His style is almost collage-like with complex layers and juxtaposed composition, drawing viewers in with their own interpretations. Discuss Joram Roukes here.
