Aaron Li-Hill for Spotify

Recently, Aaron Li-Hill (interviewed) was asked to participate in a project for Spotify where he was commissioned to create imagery for a large conference table. The unique design for the company known for their music streaming service featured a combination of things seen in the versatile artist’s work – creatures from nature along with human forms in a state of motion. Created in three parts, the large table was assembled into an impressive finished piece. Discuss Li-Hill here.

Over the weekend, Ron English (featured) made the most of his turn at the iconic Bowery & Houston wall in New York with a mural that was wheatpasted then hand finished with paint. The imagery chosen is a good representation of his work with the background being the American flag made up of modified company logos and slogans that speak to English’s satirical attack on consumerism, while the center features one of his most recognized surreal characters – the Temper Tot or “Baby Hulk.” Take a look at more photos and a […]

Previews: Brian Mashburn – “Contenders” @ Thinkspace

Opening this Saturday, April 25th, will be a small show from Brian Mashburn at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Contenders, the new body of work will consist of six 6″ x 6″ paintings centered thematically on roosters. They look to be rendered beautifully in and in detail in the foreground contrasting nicely with the North Carolina-based artist’s recognizable backgrounds. Discuss Brian Mashburn here.

After some advance street activity (covered here & here) in Hong Kong earlier this year, Invader will be returning with a show opening on May 2nd at The Qube, PMQ (35 Aberdeen Street, Central). Entitled Wipe Out, the exhibition (presented by the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation [HOCA] & Le French May) will be the French mosaic specialist’s first solo in HK. Openings: Patrick Martinez – “FORBIDDEN FRUIT” @ New Image Art

Last week at New Image Art in Los Angeles, the versatile Patrick Martinez unveiled new mixed media works with a show entitled FORBIDDEN FRUIT. The fresh work combines his signature neon light technique with sculpture & painting, taking inspiration from things like hip hop and minority culture. Examples include guns mingling and appearing with common place items like fruits highlighted by neon lights, or imagery products are placed on the wall like strange hybrids – all giving insight into Martinez’s artistic vision. Tomorrow night (April 17th), the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts will be opening a new show – Samurai! As you can probably deduce from the title, warriors from the medieval and early-modern Japan will be theme of the exhibition. Showing alongside historical Japanese arms and armor from the museum and the John Woodman Higgins collections will be works from contemporary artists invited by guest curator Eric Nakamura (interviewed), editor and founder of Giant Robot Magazine.
