Openings: “Vitality and Verve” @ Long Beach Museum of Art

Leading up to the opening of the Vitality and Verve: Transforming the Urban Landscape exhibition last night at the Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA), we had the opportunity for a preview look at some the murals being created (shared with you here & here). From what we saw, we were really excited to see the culmination of something historic and what we have never seen to this scale before with you – a museum exhibition featuring epic indoor murals from a strong roster of what is a mix of […]

Previews: Mike Lee – “Still Life” @ Giant Robot 2

Tonight (June 27) at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, Still Life will open featuring the work of Mike Lee and Vincent Nguyen. The drawings of Lee are what caught our eyes – compartmentalized slices of urban life that let the viewer take a bird’s eye view of the scene, while letting us peek inside of things that we would never have seen from that perspective. Also, the NY-based artist makes good use of negative space to focus our attention on each particular subject, which […]

Maya Hayuk Sues Starbucks

For those who frequent Starbucks, you will have no doubt seen artwork that looks disturbingly similar to the work of Maya Hayuk, an artist whose work has been covered here on AM for a while. Coinciding with the release of their new Mini Frappuccinos last month, the promotional material features crossing stripes of color often seen in the Brooklyn-based artist’s gallery work and outdoor murals. And if it’s true that Starbucks’ ad agency reached out to her last October regarding the project (which she declined due to […]

Recap: Art Basel ’15 (Part II)

Last week, AM visited Basel Week Switzerland, with the highlight being the main fair – Art Basel. After the first part of our coverage earlier this week, we now have a second set of photos for you to enjoy fro the 46th edition of the fair. Take a look at what you missed (including the Galerie Perrotin booth above with Jean-Michel Othoniel & KAWS), as well as some shot from other satellite fairs (click here for shots of SCOPE and VOLTA). Showing: Kelsey Brookes – “Plants Of The Gods” @ Eric Firestone Gallery

Currently in the Hamptons, at Eric Firestone Gallery, the San Diego-based Kelsey Brookes has a series of works on display that continue his abstract exploration of molecular structures. Moving on from painting colorful artistic interpretations of neurotransmitters (here, here & here), the former biochemist has turned his attention to naturally occurring hallucinogenic botanical compounds – Muscimol, Ergoline, Scopolamine and Ibogaine – Plants Of The Gods. The renderings mirror the psychedelic effect of the subject matter with what interestingly starts out as “precise locations of individual atoms, which then expand and radiate […]

Previews: Shepard Fairey – “Your Eyes Here” @ CAC Malaga

After leaving a memorable mark in Malaga, Spain in 2013, Shepard Fairey (featured) will be returning to the CAC Malaga for an exhibition opening on June 26th. Your Eyes Here from Shep will be shown alongside a solo with D*Face who painted the two towers with him back when they were in town last. The showing from the man behind OBEY will be a historical overview of works created throughout his 25 year career including paintings, screen prints, stencils, stickers, rubylith illustrations, collages, photographs, sculpture, and works on wood, metal, and canvas. Fairey further states […]

Streets: Miss Van (Coney Art Walls)

After bringing you a look at the walls Maya Hayuk and Ben Eine painted on for the Coney Art Walls, we now have shots of the piece Miss Van worked on. For this wall, the Toulouse legend painted one of her signature poupées between two horses. Entitled appropriately Gypsy with Stallions, the vibrant colors and imagery familiar to street art fans make this mural a worthy addition to the Deitch curated project. Photo credit: Birdman Photos. Discuss Miss Van here.

Releases: Jeremy Geddes – “Ascent” Hoodie

Daylight Curfew has just announced the release of their collaboration with Jeremy Geddes (interviewed) for their DLC Black Label line. Entitled Ascent, the same name as one of the Australian painter’s iconic images (also released as a print), the new hoodie will be limited to 100 pieces and feature their own embroidered edition numbers. For those interested, you can get more info and purchase it here. Tipped off by Evan Pricco / Juxtapoz. Discuss Jeremy Geddes here.

Upcoming: Masakatsu Sashie – “Blind Box” @ KP Projects // MKG

This Saturday night (June 27th), alongside Jeff Soto’s exhibition in the main space, Masakatsu Sashie will be presenting a set of new paintings collectively entitled Blind Box. Hosted by KP Projects / MKG in Los Angeles, the showing from the Japanese artist will feature his striking “balanced aquariums,” spheres of manmade objects suspended over urban landscapes. He further states – “I try to reconstruct familiar forms, a sense of beauty, everyday life, and landscapes from the past as well as the future. Shaping these compositions with the flow of time […]
