Recap: artBGC ONE (Manila)

Last week, we shared with you some of the works Nate Frizzell (interviewed) created for the artBGC ONE Festival in the Philippines. We now have a recap of the other murals that were created by international artists like FAILE, Cyrcle., AkaCORLEONE, Kristin Farr, Drew Merritt and Filipino artists Egg Fiasco and Anjo Bolarda for the inaugural event curated by LeBasse Projects, and held in conjunction with the Bonifacio Arts Foundation (BAFI) in Manila. Our minds are still blown by the size of the piece the Cyrcle. boys painted (seen above).

While prepping for his solo (more on this later) opening at KP Projects / MKG later this month, Jeff Soto (interviewed) recently found time to paint a mural just down the street from the Los Angeles showspace. Featuring one of his signature owls, the piece located on La Brea and West 1st Street will greet attendees when the show opens on June 26th. Recap: Gary Baseman – “Happy Toby To You” @ Time Square Hong Kong

Continuing to spread his pervasive imagery to Asia (also see Shanghai & Taipei), Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) recent project saw him celebrating his iconic Toby character’s 10th birthday in Hong Kong. Held at the busy Time Square complex in Causeway Bay, the installation (arranged by LeBasse Projects) featured a dinner party for his faithful companion as well as photo exhibition of their travels together. Set to open on Thursday night (June 18th), Thank You For Being You is Paul Wackers’ second solo (see 2011) with Morgan Lehman Gallery. Releases: Takashi Murakami x Vans Collaboration

On June 27th, Takashi Murakami will be releasing a collaboration he has been working on with Vans. Utilizing his iconic imagery, the set will include six pairs of Vans Classic Slip-Ons, four skate decks, three tees, and three pairs of slip-ons for your little art collectors out there. Yesterday, AM had the opportunity to stop by the Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) for what’s shaping up to be an epic exhibition. Put on in collaboration by Thinkspace Gallery, the people behind POW! WOW!, and LBMA, the main attraction of Vitality and Verve: Transforming the Urban Landscape are the on site installations and murals. While there, we enjoyed seeing the finishing touches and beginnings of works from Audrey Kawasaki (seen above), Aaron Horkey, Brendan Monroe, Cryptik, Esao Andrews, Greg “Craola” Simkins, Hot Tea, James Bullough, and Nosego. Some of El Mac’s most breathtaking murals are collaboration with graffiti artists where his ethereal portraiture is overlaid against a background of urban letterforms. Nuestra Gente, created earlier this year in Phoenix, Arizona, certainly fits the bill when he collaborated with local legends Mando Rascón & Pablo Luna. The background designs seen around the face were painted by Rascón and the outer images on the ends of the mural were laid down by Luna. Openings: Shepard Fairey – “Printed Matters” @ Library Street Collective

Opening last month and showing through the middle of August is Shepard Fairey’s (featured) solo at the Library Street Collective in Detroit. Entitled Printed Matters, the exhibition featured a diverse collection of the Los Angeles-based artist’s distinctive work across all mediums. A couple weeks ago, Nate Frizzell (interviewed) travelled to the Phillipines to take part in the artBGC ONE Festival.
