Previews: Lola Gil – “Thirsty” @ Roq La Rue

On March 8th, Roq La Rue in Seattle will be presenting a new body of work from Lola Gil entitled Thirsty. For her first solo showing with the gallery, the Los Angeles-based artist will be continuing her method of “Narrative Escapism” with a focus on the themes of drought and climate change as well as the insatiable lust for life and creation as referenced by the title of the show. This Saturday night (March 2nd), Kevin Peterson will once again be showing with Thinkspace in Los Angeles, reprising his practice of juxtaposing children and their animal companions in urban environments. Evoking a sense of hope and despair at the same time with his imagery, the Houston-based artist’s work presents an interesting dynamic. Previews: Rone – “Empire” Project (Melbourne)

Following up on his The Omega Project from 2017 (covered), Rone has taken that idea to the next level by creating an immersive installation in an abandoned Burnham Beeches art deco mansion in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges. Previews: Camille Rose Garcia – “Web Of Stars” @ Corey Helford Gallery

This Saturday night (February 23) at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, Camille Rose Garcia (interviewed) will be unveiling a new body of work entitled Web Of Stars. The exhibition features a selection of small paintings featuring her familiar palette, signature cast of characters, gothic feel, and Mexican culture-inspired elements. Garcia’s psychedelic new pieces include touches of cosmic imagery and references the interconnectedness of the universe, from the largest planets to the tiniest insects. POW WOW ’19 / Previews: “My Neighbor Hayao” @ Ala Moana Center

As part of this year’s POW! WOW! HAWAII, Spoke Art will be presenting a group exhibition entitled My Neighbor Hayao. The tribute show to the Hayao Miyazki features work from over 100 international artists (like Dan Mumford above) each contributing an interpretation of their favorite Miyazaki films, characters and scenes. This special weekend-only showing will be on view inside Ala Moana Center (unit 1234) from February 13-17.          

Releases: Mike Lee – “Bump & Grind” Figure Set

Following up his sculptural edition for last year’s ComplexCon, Mike Lee recently released a now sold-out figure set he called Bump & Grind. The porcelain dancers caught in an intimate moment are his first collaboration with Case Studyo and are three-dimensional representations of his signature faceless and bulbous characters. Coming up next week, James Jean (interviewed) has another print scheduled for release on his website for his collectors featuring the nymph Chelone. Starting at 8:00 AM PDT on Tuesday, February 12 and ending at 7:59 AM PDT on Wednesday, February 13, the time limited edition printed on special metallic paper will come signed and numbered. Showing: “New Classics” @ Galerie C.O.A.

At the end of last month, Galerie C.O.A. in Montreal opened up a group show featuring artists who took inspiration from artistic movements or individual masters of the past, albeit with their own contemporary take on things. Curated by Sasha Bogojev, the exhibition included work from Eleanor Mccaughey, Pablo Benzo, Ted Pim, Erkut Terliksiz, Emilio Villalba, Sean Norvet, Kathy Ager, Julio Anaya Cabanding (seen above), Doping-Pong, Aldo Sergio, and Mathieu Cherkit.

Openings: Keiichi Tanaami – “Tanaami x adidas Originals” @ Nanzuka

Over the weekend, Nanzuka in Tokyo presented a special show in association with adidas Originals from the legendary Keiichi Tanaami featuring his special mix of surreal imagery influenced by childhood memories such as the Great Tokyo Air Raid of World War II. The new body of work includes 16 new works on canvas, with many that feature the brand’s famous “Trefoil” logo and several new three-dimensional works.
