Openings: Walton Ford – “Watercolors” @ Paul Kasmin

The last time we were able to experience Walton Ford’s work in person in New York was in 2011 when he blew us away with his surreal portraits of King Kong as well as his well known naturalistic paintings. This time around, the American artist’s return to Paul Kasmin Gallery featured large scale watercolors of his chosen creatures in unusual and and ironically unnatural urban and outdoor settings. As per his usual practice, the pieces were embellished with notes, but for the first time included musings from the […]

Banksy’s Webby Awards Acceptance Video

Last week, the 18th annual Webby Awards named Banksy the Person of the Year in a surprise move. Of course, the elusive street artist was not on hand to accept the distinction awarded for excellence on the internet. The honor accorded Mr. B was a testimony to how well-known his art has become and how skillfully he is able to manage his online presence. This fact along with other things were mentioned tongue-in-check in an acceptance video the Bristol bomber released about his recent “art residency” in New […]

Upcoming: Matthew Palladino @ Garth Greenan Gallery

Tonight in Chelsea, the locally-based Matthew Palladino (interviewed) will be opening a new show at Garth Greenan Gallery. We last enjoyed his work in New York back in 2011, and fans who attended that showing and plan to be present tonight will see that his work has evolved since to include three-dimensional elements to his repertoire. The same explorations of ideas of perspective can be seen in these new pieces as well Palladino’s well-honed sense of humor. Discuss Matthew Palladino here.

Update: Conor Harrington

It looks like the Lazarides Gallery recently stopped by Conor Harrington’s (interviewed) studio to check in on the UK-based painter. What they saw was some amazing new works in progress for his upcoming debut show in New York later this year, presumably a pop up put on by the London-based gallery. Entitled Eat and Delete, the exhibition will include 10-12 large canvases that continues where the Irish artist’s Dead Meat show in London (covered) left off. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Conor Harrington here.

Previews: Travis Louie – “Before They Became Heroes or Villains” @ William Baczek Fine Arts

Tonight in Northampton, Massachusetts, William Baczek Fine Arts will be opening a new show from Travis Louie (interviewed). The exhibition will see the New York-based artist returning to the site of his showing in the area in 2012, and will feature a new body of work collectively entitled Before They Became Heroes or Villains. Featuring his surreal band of misfits and monsters dressed in proper Victorian attire, the paintings are rendered in acrylic but amazingly look like vintage photos. Take a look at more preview images below… […]
