Art Focus: Fabio Magalhaes

This week’s Art Focus sees us taking a look at the unsettling work of Fabio Magalhaes. The young artist hails from Brazil, where he is based in the city of Salvador, also where he studied at the Federal University of Bahia. Working primarily in oils, Magalhaes paints as though he was a serial killer, with images of torture and body parts, and certainly it would be concerning if he used true photo references. Mike Giant x Major Lazer / Pharrell – “Aerosol Can” Music Video

Mazer Lazer recently unveiled their latest music video Aerosol Can featuring Pharrell and the artistic stylings of Mike Giant. In the footage, you can see the heavily tattooed (last covered by us in 2012) Bay Area artist showing off his calligraphy skills as he writes out the song lyrics, augmented by graphics. Upcoming: “Steer Ahead” @ Soze Gallery

Tonight in Los Angeles at the Soze Gallery, a group show entitled Steer Ahead will open to benefit CAMP2E. Contests / Releases: Brian Viveros Prints

Tomorrow morning (April 18th) at 10 am PST, Brian Viveros (featured) will be releasing two prints through Static Medium. The first is seen above and is entitled Devil In All Of Us, a timed edition that will be sold for 48 hours with the run size determined by the number of orders during that period of time. Previews: Shepard Fairey – “50 Shades Of Black” @ Subliminal Projects

Tonight in Los Angeles, Shepard Fairey (featured) will be opening a new show entitled 50 Shades Of Black at Subliminal Projects. The exhibition is centered around the third installment (also see 2011 & 2012) of new album cover artwork, a series of works that Shep is know for, inspired by the 12-inch record cover format. Along with original hand painted multiples, there will also be a box set of screen prints available each containing the 50 new designs. Opening very soon (April 16th) at the ICA’s Lower Gallery in London is Tauba Auerbach’s first solo exhibition in the UK entitled The New Ambidextrous Universe. Consisting of seven all new pieces, the selection of work on display highlights the New York-based artist’s versatility in materials and mediums as well as her mathematical and structured approach to art making. Recap: Joe Sorren – “Knock Three Times” @ AFA Gallery

For those who missed the Joe Sorren (featured) exhibition which just closed at AFA in New York, here are some photos you can peruse from when we stopped by last month. Returning to the gallery that showed him in NYC a year ago (covered), the gifted painter presented twelve new oil paintings collectively entitled Knock Three Times. Seeing Sorren’s expressive paintings in person certainly reminds one of how emotive the gestures of his characters are and how his delicate brushstrokes can create such fantastic dream-like imagery. Streets: World Roundup (Dec 30 – Apr 13)

Mark Dean Veca – “Le Poppy Den” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Last month, the David B. Smith Gallery gave Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) the go ahead to create a site specific installation in one of the rooms of their Denver showspace. Much like his showing last year at the Orange County Musuem of Art (covered), the LA-based artist created a space, dubbed Le Poppy Den this time, where attendees could be fully immersed in his signature “Toile de Jouy” like patterns. Rewind: April 8 – April 13

Keeping things going, we have another Rewind summary for you this week. First up is origami artist Sipho Mabona, who recently folded a life-sized elephant from a since giant sheet of paper. He and his team of nearly a dozen people worked over four weeks to create the 10 foot tall sculpture. Financed through Indiegogo, the crowd funded project is now on view at KKLB in Beromünster, Switzerland. Check out the video below and more photos at My Modern Met.
