Openings: “LAX / HKG” @ Above Second Gallery

Last month, the  Above Second Gallery opened their latest show featuring a guest curator (also see AM’s turn in 2011) – Thinkspace. Entitled LAX / HKG, the group exhibition featured works imported from the Los Angeles new contemporary movement including Amy Sol, Audrey Kawasaki (above), Brian M. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Update: DALeast

With Basel Week Miami just around the corner, street and graffiti artists have been busying themselves the last several weeks on murals and walls throughout the area. One of those in town is the South Africa-based DAL who hasn’t hesitated to get up several of his kinetic creations including the piece above entitled Rug-A and the one below Osteoplasty.C. Stella Im Hultberg Studio Sale

Later today, Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed) will be holding her annual studio sale (see 2010 & 2011) where small originals can be had for very reasonable prices. This year, she will be selling 15-20 pieces so fans should head over to her webstore at 2 pm Eastern Time. Preview: Luke Chueh – “Turning Japanese” @ Idol Gallery (Tokyo)

After executing the first phase of his revenge against Japanese bootleggers by taking those images, painting, and selling then for his show in Chicago (covered), Luke Chueh (interviewed) has traveled to Tokyo where he will have a chance to see these illegal productions in person. Openings: ROA – “Carrion” @ Backwoods Gallery

The Beligum-based ROA, who was recently featured on MOCAtv, has a new exhibition in Melbourne at the Backwoods Gallery entitled Carrion. Fans down under may remember his last showing in Oz in 2010 (covered), but this time the street artist took it up a notch with his installations. Along with his anatomical dissections of native species with his brushstrokes, the art was surrounded by tanks filled with decaying creatures and skeletal remains. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Upcoming: Yoskay Yamamoto Installation @ PULSE

Those visiting the PULSE fair next week in Miami will have to keep their eyes our for an installation from the Los Angeles-based Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). The project made possible by LeBasse Projects and Perrier will be over 24′ long and consist of 120 new cast sculptures in the same vein as his do you remember me… installation for his solo in 2010. Preview: Sarah Joncas – “Taking Over” @ Last Rites

We last caught up with Sarah Joncas (interviewed) and her work during her show in June (covered) at the Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. On December 8th, New Yorkers will have the same opportunity to meet the Toronto-based artist and see her paintings in person when Taking Over opens at Last Rites Gallery. The fifteen new pieces that she has been working on for almost half a year will embrace the darker side of life with themes of death, loss of control, and becoming compromised explored. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Upcoming: David Lynch “Silencio” Night Club @ The Delano

Those making it out to Basel Week Miami this year, make sure you stop by The Delano to check out David Lynch’s fictional club, the Silencio, reproduced in real life. If you recall, Club Silencio is the unusual nightclub of the same name in his 2001 film Mulholland Drive. Lynch has already created a replica in Paris by working on the interiors, including personally designing the furniture, but this will the first appearance for Basel. Streets: Askew One (New Zealand)

Dubbed the Askew Tankfarm Project, this newest endeavor from New Zealand’s best is located in Auckland near the wharf in the Wynyard Quarter. By painting over a cluster of silos, a nod to the area’s industrial past, Askew has creating a stunning new public art attraction. The lettering recounting the entire poem Auckland by C.K.
