James Jean – “Velum Mural” @ BLITZ / Lane Crawford (Hong Kong)

Last month, we shared with you the collaboration between James Jean (featured) and the BLITZ Lane Crawford Hong Kong. Not only was he launching his OVM line of jewellery and accessories there, there were also a special collection of scarves, pouches and iphone veils has been designed by the gifted painter exclusively for the store (buy them here). Basel Week Miami ’12 / Preview: Jen Stark @ The Miami Project / Cooper Cole

Another thing to add to the list to visit next week during Basel Week Miami is the Cooper Cole booth at The Miami Project (which appears to be a new fair this year). Jen Stark, who showed with the Toronto gallery (covered) last year (as well as in Los Angeles recently), will be presenting two new holographic pedestals, a variation on her cut paper sculptures. Streets: World Roundup (Nov 19 – Nov 25)

This week’s look at public art around the world is headlined by this new piece (source) from Case (aka Andreas von Chrzanowski) in Frankfurt, Germany. Painted at the construction site for the future European Central Bank headquarters, the MaClaim crew member painted Pinnochio being manipulated by a pair of hands, making some sort of political statement. Openings: Aya Takano – “Heaven Is Inside Of You” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

Last week, Heaven Is Inside Of You opened up at the Hong Kong branch of Galerie Perrotin featuring all new works from Japanese sensation Aya Takano. The new series of paintings and drawings feature colorful dreamscapes surrounding her androgynous characters, some of which show them exploring different countries. The current output on display from the Kaikai Kiki disciple was influenced by her experiences after the catastrophic earthquake and resulting disasters in Japan.  She states: “Until I experienced the earthquake, I was living a life that was fairly pleasant. Openings: Nathan Ota – “Pop! Goes the Weasel” @ La Luz de Jesus

Earlier this month, AM paid a visit to La Luz de Jesus to check out the opening of Pop! Goes the Weasel, Nathan Ota’s new show in Los Angeles. The well attended event featured whimsical paintings from the LA-based artist full of imagery that appear often in his work such as birds, tree creatures, vibrant colors, and lettering proclaiming his graffiti roots. The Tate Modern in London recently brought together William Klein (New York) and Daido Moriyama (Tokyo), two of the most iconic photograpers and film-makers of the 20th century, for an excellent retrospective. Experimental photography, film, graphic design and the role of the photo book are the main focus of both artists. With their blurred and grainy style of photography they were able capture some poignant moments of street photography which became the benchmark for future generations in contemporary photography.
