Preview: Travis Louie – “Spirits” @ Stranger Factory

Those in Albuquerque, New Mexico tonight need to head over to Stranger Factory to check out Travis Louie’s (interviewed) newest solo show. Entitled Spirits, the new body of work features a menagerie of strange and wonderful creatures including some of the supernatural persuasion. In particular, we love the piece above – The Spirit of the Cyclo-Sasquatch – the NY-based painter’s interpretation of the mythical creature based loosely on the Patterson footage. Also, for those artists out there, Travis will be offering a very special, small-group rendering […]

Streets: Os Gemeos (Boston)

Although already open to the public as of a couple days ago, the Boston ICA will be celebrating the start of the Os Gemeos exhibition (previewed) today with a waterfront launch party, complete with Caipirinhas, Brazilian street food, and DJs who will take visitors to the heart of the artists’ native São Paulo. For those lucky enough to be in Beantown, make sure you stop by the main mural at Dewey Square (former site of Occupy Boston near South Station) where the twins have painted one of […]

Design: James Jean – Wedding Invitation

Having a good friend like James Jean (featured) certainly came in handy for one lucky couple as the LA-based artist was asked to design special wedding invitations for them. It looks to be fabricated in a similar fashion to the stunning wood piece he created for our City Of Fire show based on the union of two animals from the Chinese Zodiac – the ox and snake. Discuss James Jean here.

Streets: Shepard Fairey (Denver)

Tomorrow night (August 3rd) in Denver, the Black Book Gallery will host a three person show from Shepard Fairey, Evan Hecox, and Jim Houser. The Mile-High City last saw Shep’s work at Manifest Hope during the 2008 Democratic National Convention, but if the art community has forgotten, the OBEY crew has been up and about putting up reminders with stickers, stencils and wheat pastes. Discuss Shepard Fairey here.

Again, the list of artists include many that have been featured here before on the pages of AM like Camille Rose Garcia, Chris Berens, Madeline Von Foerster, Travis Louie, Glenn Barr, Ti Kunkit, Seamus Conley, Sam Wolfe Connolley, Laurie Lee Brom, Lindsey Carr, Jessica Joslin, Michael Alm, Handiedan, Peter Ferguson, Zoe Williams, and more. Take […]

Futura x Hennessy Launch Party (Los Angeles)

Last night, Hennessy held the Los Angeles premiere (see NY launch here) of the VS cognac bottle designed by Futura at an exclusive launch party held at the Milk Studios in Hollywood. The special bottle is a continuation of the brand’s collaboration with high profile artists (see KAWS) and it seemed that no expense was spared with Diplo and Santigold on hand to entertain the crowd. Of particular interest to fans of the graffiti legend though were various originals on display as well as a live painting session. Also on hand […]

Preview: Group Exhibition @ David B. Smith Gallery

After a short hiatus, the David B. Smith Gallery will be hosting a new group exhibition tomorrow night (August 3rd) that touts an intriguing lineup of artists. In addition to new works by returning artists Molly Dilworth, AJ Fosik, Ryan McLennan, Regan Rosburg, Paul Jacobsen, Dena Schuckit, Cole Sternberg, and Jason Thielke, the showing also features excerpts from John Houck’s Aggregates series, a captivating oil painting from Jonathan Viner (seen above), a portrait by Mark Dean Veca of the infamous Mr. Hankey, of South Park fame, new work […]

Streets: Wall Therapy Festival (Part II) – Faith47

A couple days ago, we shared with you the mural that DALeast painted for the Wall Therapy Festival in Rochester, New York. His partner in crime, Faith47 was also on hand as she painted her own wall for the event. The piece is entitled Rhapsody and features the religious iconography that is often seen in the South African street artist’s work. More detailed photos below… Discuss Faith47 here.

Streets: Olek (Washington DC)

While in town for the 40 Under 40: Craft Futures showing at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Olek decided to gift the city with one of her signature yarn statue takeovers (here & here). This time she yarn-bombed the 12-foot tall Albert Einstein statue on the grounds of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington DC. Check out more in-progress shots of her and her assistants at work below as well as the finished photo. Via My Modern Met. Discuss Olek here.
