Openings: ABOVE – “JET SET” @ Metro Gallery

ABOVE (interviewed) recently opened his solo show at the Metro Gallery entitled JET SET, appropriately named as evidenced by the Bay Area-based street artist’s globetrotting ways. The new body of work featured his signature arrows, refreshed with travel books and what look to be tourist photos. Also rounding out the exhibition was a London telephone booth installation, airline stewardesses dressed in retro 1950s “pan am” attire handing out boarding passes to showgoers, and two professional Argentinian tango dancers. Streets: Sat One – “Prisoners of the Sea” (Bulgaria)

The Munich-based Sat One recently travelled to Varna, Bulgaria to work on a multi-sided mural entitled Prisoners of the Sea. The street artist was invited by BALCANS-Magazine to wrap a tower on the top of a building which he opted to paint a selection of ships sailing and sinking through the ocean imagery. Fans in Barcelona can now see his work in the group show Homage to Moebius at Montana Gallery. Via Graffuturism.

Returning to the gallery that previously hosted two of his solos (see 2010 and 2011), Dan McCarthy (interviewed) will be filling the walls of Gallery 1988 with a new body of work, this time at their Venice location. This Saturday night July 7th, the Corey Helford Gallery will be presenting the sexy sci-fi inspired sculptures from Colin Christian and the street-inspired work of RISK with both showings the first solos with the Culver City space. The Serpentine Gallery has released a silkscreen print (signed and numbered) from AWW which will be limited to 200, sized at 84 x 84 cm, and cost £300 (excl. VAT). Tomorrow night (July 5th) in San Francisco, Luke Chueh (interviewed) will be continuing his Bearing the Unbearable book signing tour (see Los Angeles). Also, of interest to Bay Area fans will be the release of new prints from his popular sushi series of paintings, with the originals created for a 2009 showing in LA. After recently gifting New York with a mural that remixes a famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph (which is also is visible from the High Line), Sao Paulo-based street muralist Eduardo Kobra has travelled to Los Angeles to work on another piece. The commissioned wall is set to be revealed to the public today, Independence Day, at 1255 La Brea Ave. In honor of the holiday, the artist has painted his own version of the iconic Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota. The Water Tank Project (New York)

If Tom Fruin’s Watertower installation in Brooklyn is any indication, having artwork tower over art lovers in New York can make the cityscape a lot more interesting. Something that might do just that (as evidenced by these mock-up photos) is the proposed Water Tank Project, except instead of a new structure, existing water tanks (twelve feet high, thirteen feet in diameter) in NYC will be used as canvases for public art. Back in March, we introduced you to a new line of prints from Jeff Soto (interviewed) entitled Seeker Friends. The series of limited editions were from Prints On Wood with each one available for 24 hours after a specified date and time.
