Streets: Phlegm – “Waterways”

With the weather turning nicer, the Sheffiled-based Phlegm was able to get out and about painting a set of murals entitled Waterways. The whimsical pieces feature his signature characters and his continued exploration of the nautical theme, which was appropriate considering his placement. Looks like he also may have gotten a little wet based on the difficult locations he had to work in. Discuss Phlegm here.

After hitting up Belgium with his illustrative murals, Ericailcane returned to his home country to put in some more work. This newest piece was painted in Modena, Italy featuring one of his beloved animals hoarding a stash coins tied in a stranglehold around its neck while teetering on the edge of a cliff. Do Ho Suh – “Fallen Star” for UCSD’s Stuart Collection

Tomorrow in San Diego, Do Ho Suh’s Fallen Star finally opens at UCSD’s Jacobs Hall at the Jacobs School of Engineering. The project from the famed Korean sculptor, which is the 18th permanent sculpture commissioned by UCSD’s Stuart Collection, has been seven years in the making and was funded by $1.3 million in private donations. Ai Weiwei x Herzog & de Meuron Serpentine Pavilion Complete

Recently, the 12th commissioned architectural project of an annual series from the Serpentine Gallery opened to the public. The 2012 piece was a collaboration between famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and Herzog & de Meuron, the same team that was responsible for the celebrated Beijing National Stadium which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games. Recently, the UK-based Roid opened his solo show More Than Ever with TopSafe London. The Heavy Artillery and MSK affiliated writer and artist presented a series of works featuring his progressive letterforms inspired by a diverse mix of “music, nostalgia from the 80′s and 90′s, manga, and typography” which builds on his recent showing in Los Angeles (covered). Preview: Maurice Sendak Retrospective @ AFA

On the heels of the sad passing of Maurice Sendak last month, the AFA gallery in New York has announced a retrospective in loving memory of the influential illustrator. The exhibition will open on Saturday, June 9th, the day before what would have been the artist’s 84th birthday, and will remain on display through Labor Day. The showing at the SoHo space will feature nearly 50 original works, including published pieces, conceptual art and a bronze sculpture.
