Video / Streets: ABOVE (Cape Town)

After going big on multiple walls (here, here, and here) during Art Basel Miami Week ahead of a sold out showing, ABOVE (interviewed) has surfaced in Cape Town with some new work. The prolific Bay Area-based artist’s latest wall is for Origin Wines, a South African winery that leads one of the largest Fairtrade projects globally. Entitled What Goes Up, the footage of it going up is a nice primer on one of ABOVE’s techniques – projection. Some photos after the jump…

Videos: Usugrow Artist Profile

Our friends over at the Backwoods Gallery recently sent over this video that they put together as an artist profile for Japanese artist Usugrow. If you remember, we covered the calligrapher and painter’s show at the gallery along with fellow Shinganist artist, Toshikazu Nozaka back in July of last year. Making good use of the time in Melbourne, some footage of Usugrow’s amazing script in the studio as well as on the streets was interlaced with an interview where he touched on topics such as his […]

Releases: Joe Ledbetter – 12″ Mutant Bunny (Hand Painted) Part III

As you have seen in our previous coverage (here & here), Joe Ledbetter has been painting a series of mutant bunny sculptures. Sometimes mirroring paintings he has created in the past and sometimes coming up with something new, the 12″ customs are beautiful to behold and certainly something true JLed fans would want in their collections. The pieces are sculpted by Pretty in Plastic – please email [email protected] if you want to be informed of the next release. More images of the most recent pieces […]

Liu Bolin for Harper’s Bazaar

As we saw for ourselves when we spent some time with Liu Bolin in New York, his creative process is fascinating to say the least. It looks like we aren’t the only ones that feel that way as the Chinese photographer was recently commissioned by Harper’s Bazaar to work on a fashion shoot with them. The concept was to “camouflage” the designers of major fashion brands with his signature technique in photos where they were painted to blend into a background of their clothing. More photos […]

Openings: Rosson Crow – “BALLYHOO HULLABALOO HABOOB” @ Honor Fraser

Over the weekend, the Honor Fraser Gallery hosted the opening for BALLYHOO HULLABALOO HABOOB, Rosson Crow’s (featured) second solo at the Los Angeles showspace. The new body of work marks a departure from her signature imagery of decadent interiors from the past rendered with colorful urban references (last seen in 2010 here and here), and sees the LA-based painter move her narrative towards a looser and more abstract look at scenes of American growth and decline, all with a more muted palette. More photos taken […]
