Openings: INSA – “Gloss” @ Above Second (Hong Kong)

Last week, the UK-based INSA brought his erotic and distinctive works to the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong. Included in the exhibition was a large mural featuring feet and heels, a regular motif in his work. Additionally, one wall displayed a photo set of his Girl On Bike series (which he added to while in town). Also available was an exclusive glow-in-the-dark limited edition for those interested. Last week, AM was invited over to visit Jeff Soto (interviewed) in his new studio in Riverside. The multi-purpose complex not only housed his workspace and office but also a tattoo parlor, a clothing line, as well as the office of childhood friend Maxx242. Artists, what would you give to paint on a piece of history? That’s exactly what happened recently in Germany as artists like Nunca, Miss Van, and McBess were asked to paint on remnants of the Berlin Wall like Chor Boogie did last year for the Stroke.03 Art Fair. Besides the amazing boat mural that Phlegm painted for the Walk & Talk Festival in Azores, Portugal, there were also some other familiar names who got up some quality work. Vhils did his home country proud with some chiseled local portraiture, Interesni Kazki continued to impress (see Ibiza) with another large surreal mural, and Escif threw up a cryptic wall with a dinosaur and block lettering. Time flies… This year’s Baby Tattooville (see our 2009 and 2010 coverage) is creeping up on us and will go down the weekend of October 7-9. Ron English (featured) started his road trip to Detroit recently, looking to bring some of his art to the city including apparently a hand painted “grin balloon.” Along with some walls and billboards plastered with his “popaganda” imagery at the imfamous Packard Plant location, he also raised his profile in the motor city with something inflatable that could be seen from a distance. After recent visits by Shepard Fairey (covered) and COPE2 (covered), another artist heads over to make his mark in Copenhagen – ROA. The Belgium-based artist was in town for the Galore Festival taking place in the the cultural zone of Toftegårds place in Valby. For his part, the prolific street artist decided to wrap what looks like a scaled serpent painted in his distinctive anatomic style around a tower. Coming up on October 14th, Tim Biskup will be back in Los Angeles for a solo show at THIS Gallery featuring new paintings and sculptures. Focusing on other projects, we haven’t seen many exhibitions from the Biskup as of late with the last show in LA being at De La Barracuda in 2009 (not counting his installation at The Standard Hollywood). Tracey Emin’s Work Installed In UK’s Governmental Headquarters

10 Downing Street, or known by people in the UK as Number 10, the governmental headquarters recently had one of Tracey Emin’s signature neon signs installed. Intended as a gift (to the Government Art Collection) and a suggestion, the piece was placed in the Terracotta Room by order of the Prime Minister David Cameron, who is the fan of the often provocative YBA’s work.
