Openings: Audrey Kawasaki – “Restlessly Still” @ Merry Karnowsky

On Saturday night, the LA art crowd packed the Merry Karnowsky Gallery to see the work of three artists – Femke Hiemstra, Deedee Cheriel, and of course Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed). On display were paintings and cutout drawings all displaying Ms. Kawasaki’s exquisite eye for detail, mastery of her medium (especially in integrating wood grain), and her sensuous touch. After being impressed by what we saw in an advanced look a couple weeks ago, we can now say that seeing the pieces on the walls and in the proper […]

Os Gemeos Commission for will.i.am

It’s well established that will.i.am is a patron of the arts as evidenced by his involvement with the Grammy art shows (2009 and 2010) and music video featuring the work of Shepard Fairey. Now we see a little bit of his personal collection as he has added this commissioned piece from Os Gemeos entitled boombox planet centered on a character with his likeness standing on a globe of speakerboxes that the twins have made famous with multiple installations including at exhibits in LA, Paris, Portugal, and […]

Take a look at the full list of events here as well as some in progress photos of Simkins […]

Streets: West Hollywood Library Wrapup (Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, RETNA)

Although the new public library in West Hollywood isn’t set to open until the fall, the three large murals by Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, and RETNA are now complete. Billed as an extension to MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition, the project (which we have been following) was apparently conceived by Jeffrey Deitch himself and will also include some additional indoor work from Fairey. The work however may not be permanent as the city has only committed to hosting the murals through July 2012. More […]

Streets: Conor Harrington (London)

After gifting his native country of Ireland with three cowboy-themed murals (here, here and here), Conor Harrington (interviewed) has returned to England to continue working on his next solo show. He did find time however to paint this wall in London going back to his signature colonial style. More shots from unusualimage after the jump, but also check out some in-progress photos from Hooked Blog here.

Tonight, besides Ewelina and Genevive Zacconi’s joint show (previewed), the Copro Gallery will also be hosting a group exhibition entitled Genesis to Revelation. Included in the exhibition are Chris Mars, Naoto Hattori, Stephanie Henderson, Tin, Leslie Ditto, Chrystal Chan, Dave MacDowell, Charles Wish, Vincent Cacciotti, Brian Smith and many more. Take a look the interesting direction Luke Chueh decided to take his piece (above) with […]

If the teaser image seen above and if the last event he put on in January (covered) is any indication, you do not want […]

For the film poster collectors out there, Mondo will be releasing their Cowboys & Aliens series today at a random time. One of the artists tapped to design one of them for the possibly soon to be cult classic is none other than Daniel Danger (interviewed) who is currently showing in NY (covered). The 18 x 24″ screenprint will be hand numbered in an edition of 420 with a wood variant also available.  As you can see, some of his classic twilight imagery including his floating ghosts made […]

Streets: Blu for “Draw The Line Festival” (Italy)

Continuing to tear through Europe (Bologna, Palestra, Jesi, Krakow, Poznań, Fabriano, Cologne, Grottaglie, Valencia, Italy) at a torrid pace since March, Blu has hit up his home country again at the Draw The Line Festival in Campobasso, Italy. This new wall caused some initial controversy, of which the Italian street artist is not unfamiliar with after the MOCA incident, and features his views on war and a biting rendition of how the military produces their soldiers. More detailed views after the jump…
