Streets: Blu & Ericailcane (Bologna)

No stranger to collaborations (see Nuart), not to mention both being automatic invites to any serious street art event, Blu and Ericailcane have teamed up for another piece – this time in Bologna. We should see more from these two Italian artists as the weather heats up and outdoor painting season starts again. Discuss Blu here. Discuss Ericailcane here.

The engaging talk revealed his plan for worldwide participation in his new project where people could use art to change the world. His wish is for everyone to stand up for what they care about and enable them by allowing them to upload images onto the INSIDE OUT website. JR will send you back the enlarged photo […]

Teaser / Setup: Armory Week ’11 – Jim Houser (Jonathan LeVine booth @ VOLTA)

Showing with Jonathan LeVine at the VOLTA satellite fair (also see Mark Jenkins & Richard Colman) at this year’s Armory Week will be Jim Houser. Judging from all the setup action we see, attendees can look forward to very nice installation which is typical for the Philadelphia-based artist (ie last year’s Subliminal Projects show).  AM loves his quilt-like blocks of imagery and look forward to seeing new symbology added to his lexicon.

Teaser: Kris Lewis @ David B. Smith Gallery

We last talked to Kris Lewis (interviewed) at last year’s Grammy group show which he co-curated and also in 2009 before his show at David B. Smith Gallery. Time flies as he’s scheduled again for a solo exhibition in May at the Colorado showspace with a new body of work; the piece above being the first piece we have seen.  If that is any indication, we are in for a great show.  We’ll have more to follow as the show draws nearer. Discuss Kris Lewis […]

Videos / Openings: Ed Ruscha – “Psycho Spaghetti Westerns” @ Gagosian (Beverly Hills)

Last week, the Gagosian in Beverly Hills hosted Psycho Spaghetti Westerns, Ed Ruscha’s first painting exhibition in LA in twelve years. The legendary artist brought ten large pieces for his Los Angeles fans, each an extension of the ideas he played with in his Course of Empire series, with which Ruscha represented the U.S. at the 2005 Venice Biennale. For those interested, you can take a look at the video footage above of the opening from hyde or die and also check out some photos […]

Preview: INLE @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Next Thursday, March 11th, the highly anticipated INLE group show will open at Gallery 1988’s Melrose location. Curated by Greg Simkins, the exhibition has been a long time coming for the LA-based artist as much of his work references his childhood favorite, Watership Down, a book that has had a profound impact on him as an artist. Featuring one of the best lineup of artists we have seen in a long time, this is definitely one show you don’t want to miss. Take some time […]

Openings: Clare Rojas – “Inside Bleak” @ PRISM Gallery

Last night, AM attended the jam-packed opening of Clare Rojas’ solo exhibition at the PRISM gallery with what appeared to be the rest of young Hollywood. The San Francisco-based painter and musician impressed with her folk-inspired murals, paintings, wall panels, and the sheer breadth of her work. Filling the expansive architectural space is no small feat, but Rojas did it by further exploring the abstraction she recently started as well as increasing the detail in her figurative work. More opening pics after the jump…

Teaser: Armory Week ’11 – Mark Jenkins – “Family Room” @ Carmichael Gallery (Volta)

Continuing our look at this year’s upcoming Armory Week in New York, we turn our attention to the Carmichael Gallery who will have a booth at the VOLTA satellite fair. The LA gallery will be presenting Family Room, a installation of new sculptural works from Mark Jenkins converting their space into an unconventionally furnished family room which will in turn be his commentaries on the institutions of family and home. Discuss Mark Jenkins here.
