Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Trophies” @ PRISM

Last night, PRISM filled its spacious gallery rooms with Trophies, the fourth in a series of shows from Ryan McGinness. As with the other Los Angeles exhibitions we have already covered (Michael Kohn & Country Club), this showing centered around a theme – gold sculptural pieces based on his Women series or works. Along with some wall murals, these 3-dimensional representations from the NY-based artist are taken from his deconstruction of the female form. More opening pics after the jump from Brandon Shigeta.

Showing: Glenn Brown @ Galerie Max Hetzler

Those currently in Berlin would be well advised to make it over to Galerie Max Hetzler as they are set to close on a fantastic new body of work from Glenn Brown.  The Turner Prize nominated English artist, known for reinterpreting others works with his bold color choices and swirling brushwork, also has some of his “painted sculptures” on display at the show (part of Gallery Weekend Berlin) While staring at each painting, one can’t help but find your attention is drawn to each individual […]

Art HK ’11 – James Jean @ Martha Otero

Using a unique four panel painting (previewed) contrasted nicely against a mural backdrop as the anchoring point in the booth, Martha Otero continued to supply fans of James Jean’s (featured) work more eye candy – this time at Art Hong Kong. Also included in the display were more paintings, drawings, special limited editions, and a first look at his Rebus book (more on this later), which was also the title of his recent exhibition at the Los Angeles showspace. Take a look at more pics […]

Art HK ’11 – Overview

Taking another step forward since our coverage of the fair last year, Hong Kong International Art Fair has expanded to include 260 blue-chip galleries as well joined the fold of Art Basel. Fueled by the voracious appetite and the newfound wealth of collectors in China and other parts of Asia, the region has become more and more important to the longtime strategy of art dealers and galleries – making Art HK the perfect stage. We’ll take a more focused look for you soon, but for […]

Openings: Tim Burton Retrospective @ LACMA

Coming up this Sunday, May 29th, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) will open their doors to a major retrospective exploring the full range of Tim Burton’s creative career, not only as a director but an artist, illustrator, photographer, and writer. Organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, who hosted the Hollywood visionary back in 2009 (covered), the exhibition features over “700 drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera, including art from a […]

Showing: Aron Wiesenfeld – “New Drawings & Paintings” @ Arcadia Fine Arts

AM recently stopped by Arcadia Fine Arts in New York to admire Aron Wiesenfeld’s newest exhibition. The showstopper was definitely the huge 70″ x 95″ The Wedding Party oil on canvas painting. The dark train tunnel was stunningly contrasted against the expanse of snow with its almost ghostly procession and must be seen in person to fully appreciate.  The large piece was accompanied by other oil paintings as well as charcoal works which were mostly insightful portraits that exuded a soft and intimate look at characters that […]

Teaser: Takashi Murakami @ Gagosian (London)

It’s been over two years since we attended the opening for a Takashi Murakami show at the Gagosian in London. At the end of June, fans in the UK will again have a chance to enjoy the Superflat master’s work in person, this time at the Britannia Street space. After a showing with the blue-chip gallery at Art Hong Kong this week, Mr. Kaikai Kiki will certainly start focusing on his next new body of work.  No word yet on what will be on display […]

Videos: “Madre” (Fame Festival 2010)

In the midst of the excitement from getting confirmation that there will be a Fame Festival this year, a video from last year’s event was recently released. Focusing mainly on Word to Mother and his contribution to the one of the best, if not the best street art festivals out there, the footage follows WTM as he works on various mural around the little Italian town and catches some of the work from other artists in the process. Entitled Madre, the short film is the […]

Preview: Greg Simkins & Lola – “Escape With Me” @ Yves Laroche

As we turn our attention to June, one of the highlights for us will definitely be the pairing of Greg Simkins (featured) and Lola (featured) at Yves Laroche opening June 8th. Entitled Escape With Me, the show is just that, an escape into the imaginative worlds filled with Greg’s fantastical creatures and Lola’s pointy-toed denizens. Judging from this preview image Greg sent us (seen above), the show will include some of his most beloved imagery like tentacles, his white-knight (or related character painted blue and […]

Streets: Blu for Outer Spaces Festival (Poland)

Perhaps it’s the warm weather. Perhaps it’s a coming to peace with the whole high profile buffing situation. More than likely, it’s simply that the creative juices are flowing like wine and it’s time to drink. Whatever the case, ever since putting up his first piece since the MOCA incident in Palestra (covered) last month, Blu has been getting paint to wall at near record pace. Since May alone, the street art legend has targeted Jensi (covered) & Bologna in Italy, and Krakow, Poland (covered) with […]
