Preview: “Linear Empires” @ White Walls SF

White Walls has put together a show opening tonight in SF that feature artists whose work, across various mediums, play with ideas of symmetry, lines, and geometric design.  The show entitled Linear Empires will include artists Augustine Kofie, Geoff Campen, Diana Ruiz, Mary Iverson, Richard Pearse, Brendan Monroe and Gregory Ito. POW WOW ’11 / Interview: Jasper Wong

With POW WOW fast approaching next week, we will be publishing a series of interviews with the participants of this year’s event. Naturally, first up is the mastermind behind the annual art get-together, Jasper Wong. A man of many talents – artist, gallery owner (Above Second), illustrator, and crossdresser – we’ll be looking forward to what he has planned for us next week when the festivities start. Streets: Armsrock (Vienna)

Continuing his exploration of projection art (see his show and participation in the Lightsound Project in Copenhagen), Armsrock (interviewed) recently visited Vienna and illuminated selected walls and monuments with some of his drawings. The Danish artist has been in the Austrian capital immersed in the quartier21 artist-in-residence program and appears to be keeping busy before heading back home for various other projects and shows scheduled for the rest of the year. Releases: Aiko – “Lady Butterfly” Sculpture

Aiko Nakagawa just reported yesterday that her Lady Butterfly sculpture is nearing completion.  The complex piece produced by Tomenosuke Sho-ten requires assemblage of 13 little components and features elements of her iconic imagery. Inspired by her love for the Baroque sculptures she saw in Rome, Aiko describes her creation as “a fairy of the street… comes in the night and draws stories of love and romance with her spray paint.” Scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day, the limited figure will eventually be painted in five […]

POW WOW ‘ 11 / Streets: Angry Woebots & Ekundayo

It looks like the POW WOW preparations are already underway in Hawaii as late addition Ekundayo and Aaron Martin (Angry Woebots) get up on the walls of the FreshCafe / Loft in Space venue. The space will house all the live-painting, starting on the 16th, and main event on the 19th so hopefully we’ll be seeing more murals soon. More pics after the jump…

Openings: Elbow-Toe – “Due Date” @ Warrington Museum

Last December, Brooklyn-based Elbow-Toe (interviewed) took his wonderful “cut paper paintings” to the Warrington Museum in the UK. Due Date, billed to be his first solo showing across the pond, explores his “preconceived notions of parenthood and the opportunities for growth that come through that process.” Featuring a set of images on panels and a set of images on paper, each series provides a contrast between staged environments and stark isolation. Teaser: “Pens and Needles” @ London Miles

Coming up later this month, February 25th to be exact, the London Miles Gallery will be hosting a group show based thematically on tattoos and their associated paraphernalia. Entitled “Pens and Needles”, the exhibition will feature photographs, original stencils from tattoos, paintings and live tattooing and includes artist (fine art and tattoo artists) Shawn Barber, Estevan Oriol, and Tom Bagshaw. It certainly sounds like a night for good art, especially if you are into the culture.

This Thursday night, February 10th, Black Rat Projects will open their first show of the year – Printmaking Today. Husband and and wife duo, Colin & Sas Christian (interviewed), return to the Opera Gallery in March, this time in New York. After a strong homecoming of sorts last February in London with a show entitled Inner Space (covered), they are again collaboratively creating a new body of work.
