Decoding Jackson Pollock

Could Jackson Pollock’s famous painting “Mural” (commissioned by the collector Peggy Guggenheim for her New York City apartment) actually contain the letters of his name? According to art historian, Henry Adams, that’s exactly what he sees hidden among the one of the 20th century’s most important artworks.  At first we were skeptical as most Pollock “experts” were, but check out this little roll-over interactive feature and you may be convinced as well.

Teaser: Miss Van – “Lovestain” @ StolenSpace

Acclaimed female street artist Miss Van is set to open her show “Lovestain” at StolenSpace on the 1st of October. Although the show will be somewhat of a retrospective, she’ll also be bringing a new body of work that sounds impressive as she’ll be taking over two exhibition spaces. Last we saw of her, she was opening a small two person show with Jeremy Fish in SF so we are excited to see what she has created for her largest solo to date. There will […]

Preview: “Three Apples” Hello Kitty Show @ Royal T

We have tried to avoid posting about this show for a while now, but glimpses of new work pouring into the AM office forced our hand. Yes, Hello Kitty’s 35th Anniversary is upon us (what, you didn’t know?) and SANRIO has enlisted a pretty nice list of artists to help them celebrate including Gary Baseman (featured), Ron English (featured), Buff Monster (featured), Camilla d’Errico, Luke Chueh (interviewed), Deph, Yosuke Ueno, Colin Christian, Amanda Visell, Jeremyville, Melissa Haslam (interviewed), Hush (interviewed) just to name a few. Showing: Herakut @ Berliner Liste Art Fair

Looks like there’s some new work from Herakut (interviewed) currently showing at this years’ Berliner Liste art fair.  Established six years ago, the fair has grown into the second largest in Berlin (behind the Art Forum) and has become known for its support of fresh young contemporary artists. German collaborative duo Herakut certainly fit the bill coming off successful shows in the UK and in NY.  Some more images as well as a video…  After the jump.

Publications: “The Rest Is Up To You”

In a way reminiscent of how some artists have collaborated with their kids in creating art (think Jeff Soto (interviewed) & daughter Shannon or Tim Biskup & daughter Tigerlily), there is a new book out entitled “The Rest Is Up To You.” We don’t know who Cohen Morano is, but his father sure hooked it up for the first-grader.  He sent some watercolors by the boy to a illustrious list of artists and had them collaborate with the resulting art becoming the basis of this […]

Video: Blu & David Ellis – “COMBO” – a Collaborative Animation for Fame Festival 2009

Well, the wait is finally over. The much anticipated collaborative animation between Blu and David Ellis that we hinted about here and here is finally done. The patterns and colors of Ellis’ work blend really well with Blu’s more muted kinetic work. Props to these two artists for the creative camera work as well the time and effort this obviously required. This will go down as one of the top highlights for this years’ FAME Festival (coverage here) and is highly recommended. Via Unurth. Discuss […]

Video: Studio Visit with Mia

We just received this video of a studio visit with Mia (interviewed) and wanted to share it you our readers. In the video, she talks about her inspirations from childhood, her current inspirations, and shows glimpses of her studio.  Her next show looks to be a pop-up show in NY in November along with Tessar Lo, Yoskay Yamamoto, Edwin Ushiro, Eric Fortune, and Joao Ruas. Streets: Banksy – “No Ball Games”

Another piece from Banksy has popped up in London (corner of Tottenham High Road and Philip Lane), this time a variation on the “No Ball Games” piece that we first told you about here.  If you recall, that piece had them throwing around a TV with a basketball showing on the screen.  This new stencil comes on the heels of another new piece that we showed you a couple days ago. Perhaps there are more to come?  More images after the jump…

Behind the Scenes: The Date Farmers – “Medicine Crow” Print

We recently saw some behind the scenes photos of the making of The Date Farmers’ newest print “Medicine Crow” from Modern Multiples. If the image looks familiar to you, it’s probably because you saw it at their most recent exhibition, “Strange Fruit,” currently showing at FIFTY24SF. Sounds like there are three colorways so far – “Watermelon,” “Cotton Candy” and “Southwest.” Take a look at the photo set after the jump.
