Behind the Scenes: Scott Musgrove Bronzes

Here’s a first look at a pretty exciting project Scott Musgrove is working on with the Metalphysic Studio bronze foundry in Arizona. Look at these massive clay sculpts for what appear to be two pretty large-scale sculptures. Not sure when these be ready but maybe for his May 2010 show at Jonathan Levine? One can only hope. Openings: Barry McGee @ Biennale de Lyon

Barry McGee’s participation in the annual Biennale de Lyon was cause for excitement in the AM offices, especially after seeing some video footage.  Some photos surfaced this morning of the opening of the immersive installation Mr. Twist graced the French with (consisting of some new and old elements).  Looks like McGee went all out with tagged overturned vans, paintings, classic patterned pieces, just an overall aweseom exhibit. More pics after the jump…

Interviews: Kris Lewis

We recently had the chance to have a brief chat with Kris Lewis regarding his recent show at David B. Smith Gallery. Topics included themes in his works, his influences and inspirations, and the use of symbolism. We were also tipped off about the soon release of one of the paintings “White Flag” from the show as a print (seen after the jump).

UK based artist Von, or HelloVon as he has come to be known, is opening his show “Semblance” (previewed) at Cerasoli Gallery. The show has been on display since last weekend but the opening reception is this Saturday, September 19th at the Culver City gallery. We sat down with him to talk about his beautiful paintings which incorporate abstract and realistic elements at the same time lending to a dream-like, ethereal feel to this body of work. Questions & answers after the jump…

Openings: Edwin Ushiro – “Softly Encompassing the Womb” @ LeBasse Projects

Something about LeBasse Projects’ new space brings out the best in its stable of artists. With Tessar Lo and Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) taking it up another level (here & here), Edwin Ushiro could not help but elevate his game for his solo that opened last weekend, “Softly Encompassing the Womb.”  With a body of work inspired by childhood ghost stories he heard growing up in Hawaii, Ushiro impressed the crowd with the meaningful and personal work as well as dazzled eyes with his new vibrant […]

Video/Preview: Barry McGee @ Biennale de Lyon

This year’s Biennale de Lyon will be opening soon with the theme of “The Spectacle of Everyday.” Curated by SF based Hou Hanru, it’s not surprising that this year Barry McGee will be participating in the annual art event in Lyon, the second largest metropolitan area (behind Paris) in the heart of France (Sept 16th – Jan 3rd). Take a look at glimpses of McGee hard at work creating one of the fantastic installations he is famous for in the video above. Discuss Barry McGee […]

Openings: Camille Rose Garcia – “The Hydra of Babylon” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Our little art world celebrated one of its brightest stars last night when Camille Rose Garcia opened her show “The Hydra of Babylon” (setup) at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Fans, collectors, artists and well-wishers turned out in droves to take in the Los Angeles based surrealist artist’s paintings, embellished drawings, murals, plushes and some nice little jar pieces. Garcia’s latest body of work explored the ideas of ecological collapse and human catastrophe along with the healing power of nature. Her bold new colors mixed with her […]

Preview: Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction

Fifteen years is a long time. For a magazine & brand that pioneered coverage of art that nobody else wanted to cover, Juxtapoz has come a long way. Humble websites like ours probably would not be around if not for their efforts to expose our generation to artists who otherwise would not have gotten any publicity. So imagine what a treasure trove of works they will be able to come up with for a 15th Anniversary Auction. We are salivating just thinking about it. The […]
