Teaser: Robert Williams – “Conceptual Realism in the Service of the Hypothetical”

New Yorkers are in for a treat as the godfather of the Low Brow Movement, Robert Williams, is resurfacing for a rare solo show at the prestigious Tony Shafrazi Gallery at the end of October. It sounds like there will be 25 new paintings as well as a catalog accompanying the exhibition which will continue on in 2010 to other galleries throughout the country (Cal State Northridge confirmed for Feb-April). More info to follow later, but for now, check out the artist statement after the […]

Video: The London Police – “Brothers in Arms” Preview

AM stopped by Carmichael Gallery on Friday to check in on Chaz and Bob (The London Police) and their newest show “Brothers in Arms” (teased). We were surprise to see them handcuffed together as they went about finishing up their paintings and setting up their show (some of their best work to date by the way).  Suffice it to say that it will make it interesting in the days leading up to the opening next Thursday night.  We’ll have more on our little visit later […]

Preview/Video: Edwin Ushiro – “Softly Encompassing the Womb” @ LeBasse Projects

Edwin Ushiro is making his bid for collectors to take notice on a jam-packed week of art coming up. With big shows almost everyday starting on Wednesday, an artist really has to bring his “A game” to get some love this week. Luckily, judging from what we have seen and by the trailer video by Modus Films for “Softly Encompassing the Womb,” Ushiro has done just that. With his unique blend of Hawaiian and Japanese aesthetics, his vibrant paintings are a breath of fresh air […]

Streets: Blu in Milan

Looks like Italian street artist Blu has struck again, this time in Milan. It was only just recently that we saw him working in Grottaglie (here, here, and here) on his part for the FAME Festival this year. He apparently also had time to get this huge mural up giving bicylists a little chance for payback as you see them crush cars in their path. More images after the jump.

Releases: Usugrow Prints

If you missed the Usugrow prints from the “Shinganist” shows (SF & London), here is your second chance.  Upperplayground is releasing six prints, each priced at $200 (cheaper than £180 at the shows although those were framed).  Check out the rest after the jump…

Openings: Shawn Barber & Turf One – “Life Size” @ Yves Laroche Gallery

Shawn Barber’s joint show (previewed) with Turf One entitled “Life-Size” opened last night at the Yves Laroche Gallery.  A good size crowd showed up to take in the raw and honest portraits of tattoo culture that Barber is known for as well as street artist Turf One (aka Jean Labourdette) and his unique sculptural and caricature-like approach to painting.  Take a look at all the pics after the jump…

Streets/Video: El Mac – “Faces of Life” @ Fifty24SF

Besides working on the body of work for his solo show at Fifty24SF (covered), El Mac also took time to throw up some street pieces around SF. Here are some videos documenting some of the process for those who are interested. Part II and Part III after the jump…

Teaser: Gregory Euclide @ David B. Smith Gallery

You may have seen some of Gregory Euclide’s wonderfully textured work recently at the “Sea No Evil” benefit. Here we have a video that gives us a first look at some of the Minnesota based artist’s body of work as he prepares for his upcoming show at David B. Smith Gallery in October. Take a look at more of his paintings with a three-dimensional twist after the jump…

The artists will be working on murals as well as present some collaborative paintings for the show. Check out a couple more setup pics from the other artists after the jump…

Preview: Shawn Barber – “Life Size” @ Yves Laroche Gallery

Fresh off his show in San Francisco, Shawn Barber is already set to open another show, this time in Canada. In “Life Size,” a joint show with Turf One, Barber will be gracing us with more of his tattoo “portraiture” that we have come to know and love. The show opens tomorrow night, September 2nd, at Yves Laroche Gallery. More preview images from both artists after the jump.
