Armory Week ’16: Armory Art Fair

Earlier this month, New York City welcomed in the Armory Art Show. This annual event showcases some of the brightest names and current trends in contemporary art (@ Pier 94) with a portion dedicated to some of the classics from art history (@ Pier 92). This main fair brought thousands of art lovers from all over the world and is the central hub of the Armory Week fairs and festivities. Take a look at some of the interesting works on display below. Recap: Daniel Arsham – “My First Show in Japan, Year 2044” @ Nanzuka

Daniel Arsham currently has on display his first solo presentation in Japan at Nanzuka Gallery in Tokyo, also his second in Asia following his show at Galerie Perrotin in Hong Kong last autumn (covered). Titled My First Show in Japan, Year 2044, the exhibition introduces his signature concept of “Fictional Archaeology” to local art lovers. Capturing the future from an archaeological perspective, his haunting pieces allow viewers to imagine the possibility of various everyday objects becoming artifacts of the future – from technical gadgets such as cameras, players, phones to “fossilized” humans themselves. After a six month break, HHH gallery in Tokyo will be opening its doors again on the 21st of March. Coinciding with the start of the local sakura season, their first show in 2016 will be Unknown Scorcher, an exhibition from Meguru Yamaguchi (featured). Releases: James Jean – “Kali” Print

On March 23rd, James Jean (interviewed) will be releasing a new time-limited print (starting 8:00 AM PDT and available for 12 hours only) through his webstore entitled Kali. The image is taken from one of his paintings for his show in Tokyo last year (covered) and features the Japan-based artist’s surreal take on the Hindu goddess of empowerment. The giclee will include a silkscreened pink dot pattern which were hand painted in the original. More details here. Discuss James Jean here.

Earlier this year, Tracey Emin collaborated with her long time friend and jewellery designer Stephen Webster on a new line of wearable art. The 50-piece collection entitled I Promise To Love You is inspired by the British artist’s signature neon art and her sketches of woodland animals of which she states – “I chose the woodland creatures as I wanted to work with the idea of English animals. Eleven years since his last Australian solo show, Barry McGee returns “down under” for a one night event. In conjunction with RVCA, this Thursday night, the 17th of March, Sydney’s Monster Children magazine will be opening (and closing) his exclusive solo show at their exhibition space MC06 in Camperdown. Curated by one of our own here at AM, Khoi Nguyen, a one-night only exhibition from photographer Quam Odunsi will open on March 31st in Los Angeles (3278 Wilshire Blvd). Entitled Hollywood, the show is presented by The Art of Elysium with proceeds to benefit the nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of artists and critically ill children. Releases: KAWS – “Man’s Best Friend” Print Set

Pace Prints just announced their newest print release with KAWS. Man’s Best Friend is a monumental set of 10 black and white screenprints, similar to the installation shown at his 2014 show at Honor Fraser Gallery (covered). Based on Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts, the prints are KAWS’ take on the popular cartoon. By combining macro views of lines that comprise of the forms of Snoopy, Woodstock and friends, along with his signature XX, the Brooklyn-based artist created appealing abstract images.
