Rewind: April 8 – April 13

Keeping things going, we have another Rewind summary for you this week. First up is origami artist Sipho Mabona, who recently folded a life-sized elephant from a since giant sheet of paper. He and his team of nearly a dozen people worked over four weeks to create the 10 foot tall sculpture. Showing: Mario Wagner – “A Glow That Transfers Creativity” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last week, the Hashimoto Contemporary welcomed Bay Area artist Mario Wagner (featured) into their space for a showing entitled A Glow That Transfers Creativity. The solo exhibition consisted of paintings, collage-based installation, and animations displayed on old tube televisions. Taking a mixed media approach, the German born artist reinterprets images he finds in a variety of methods resulting in a style that is both retro and futuristic at the same time. Aaron Li-Hill – “Here Now” @ Portsmouth Museum of Art

A couple weekends ago, the Portsmouth Museum of Art hosted a two day only event entitled Here Now. The showcase featured the work of Aaron Li-Hill and Judith Ann Braun, who both produced site specific installations. For his part, the New York-based Li-Hill created one of his kinetic fencer murals, augmented by a loosely constructed scaffold of material. Upcoming: “SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot” @ Oakland Museum of California

From our recent coverage of a showing at GR2, you already know that this is the 20 year anniversary of art and culture magazine Giant Robot. SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot at the Oakland Museum of California, opening on April 19th, continues the celebration with a group show featuring artists Ako Castuera, Sean Chao, Luke Chueh, Hamburger Eyes, Andrew Hem, James Jean, kozyndan, Masakatsu Sashie, Shizu Saldamando, Rob Sato, Amy Sol, Deth P Sun, Adrian Tomine, and David Choe, seen above painting a large mural. Releases: Jeff Soto – “Seeker Friends Elements: Life” Print

Earlier this year, we introduced you to the Seeker Friends Elements series from Jeff Soto (interviewed). A continuation of his Seeker Friends prints, the set of nine total timed editions will have a new addition, Life, on Thursday at noon PST, and will be available for 24 hours until noon PST on Friday after which no more will be sold. Sized at 6″ x 6″ on sustainable plywood, the new print will be available for $30 at the aforementioned time at Prints On Wood. Discuss Jeff Soto here.

Tracey Emin’s Work On Display At The Cosmopolitan Hotel (Las Vegas)

Like last year in New York City’s Time Square, Tracey Emin’s work is currently on display in another high profile location. The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, a hotel known for its commitment to the arts, are displaying images of the UK artist’s neon love notes on its giant LED sign outside as well as on other indoor and outdoor marquees.
