Art Focus: Tom McKinley

It’s time for another Art Focus, with this edition introducing the work of Tom McKinley. The San Francisco based artist works in oils, creating paintings of mid-century and modern homes seen typically from outside, often times illuminated by twilight. Rendered in a photo-realistic style, the unoccupied architectural gems filled with art and furniture almost make a viewer feel like a voyeur as well as a little envious of spaces that we may never have. Thomas Canto recently created a futuristic installation inside of one of the rooms at the Vieux Panier Hotel in Marseilles. This small hotel is built in an old Corsican grocery shop, and it has five unique rooms, each designed in a different style by a contemporary artist for a period of one year. Infusion at Roq la Rue opened on Thursday, March 6th to a packed audience. The show’s goal was to infuse the gallery with talent that had not been seen in the gallery previously. Streets: Maya Hayuk – Bowery & Houston Mural (Part II)

Last month, AM caught up with Brooklyn based artist Maya Hayuk as she braved the polar vortex conditions that have plagued NYC all winter. Spending more than a week hand painting the entire Bowery and Houston mural with her signature style, she was finally able to completed her visual contribution to the iconic New York street corner. During January, our friends at Very Near Almost (VNA) invited us to come along on a visit to Swoon (interviewed) Brooklyn studio while they conducted an intimate photo shoot for their 25th issue. Armory Week ’14: Volta

One of the satellite fairs we visited first during New York’s Armory Week is Volta. This unique event does not showcase a sampling of a diverse roster of artists like most booths, but instead the invited gallerists select one artist to focus on.
