Showing: Chen Fei – “Flesh and Me” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

Currently in Hong Kong, the local branch of Galerie Perrotin has an exhibition on display from Chen Fei entitled Flesh and Me. Despite the Chinese artist’s original training in film, he chose to depict his artistic visions on canvas. Because of this background, his works often have a cinematic reference and feel to them and often features the sex, desire and violence often seen in that genre. Take a look at some more images below and stop by for a look yourself if you are in […]

Showing: Ian Strange: “Final Act” @ Canterbury Museum

On February 22nd of 2011, an earthquake struck the city of Christchurch, New Zealand leaving 185 people dead and ultimately 16,000 homes inhabitable. And, as a result, also leaving 16,000 families with no alternative but in most cases to relocate. Artist, activist and humanitarian, Ian Strange took it upon himself to explore these now vacant communities, while teaming up with renowned cinematographer, Alun Bollinger (whose name you may recognize from such movie credits as Lord of The Rings, among others). The goal, to shine one […]

Recap: Sol Lewitt @ Paula Cooper Gallery

Back in the fall, Paula Cooper Gallery transformed their main Chelsea space with a Sol Lewitt piece entitled Wall Drawing #564: Complex forms with color ink washes superimposed. Lewitt is generally considered one of the most important figures in conceptual art and is known for creating detailed instructions for art works, which then could be made and remade by trained craftsmen. In that vein, Wall Drawing #564—with its multicolored, multifaceted forms covering nearly 2,500 square feet of wall space—is a presentation of a work first […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Rubell Family Collection – “28 Chinese”

While down in Miami for Art Basel Week, we took the opportunity to check out 28 Chinese, the current exhibition at the Rubell Family Collection. As the name implies, the show consisted of paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos by 28 contemporary Chinese artists which were acquired by the Rubells’ during multiple visits to China between 2001 and 2012. Although a few of the artists included, such as Ai Weiwei, are very well known, others had never before shown their work in the United States. The exhibition […]

Studio Visits: Wayne White

AM recently got the chance to visit Wayne White in his Los Angeles studio. His workspace is as amazing and surreal as you would imagine, including four foot tall eyes and an oversized mask of former president Lyndon Johnson. Although White is best known in the art world for his paintings that combine vintage imagery with clever, bright colored words, he is also recognizable as the star of the documentary Beauty is Embarrassing and for his work on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. When we arrived he was […]

LA Art Show ’14: Highlights

Yesterday, AM stopped by the 19th edition Los Angeles Art Fair at the LA Convention Center to see what the art world had to offer. Although the event lacked some some of the blue-chip power seen at some other art fairs, there was still plenty to hold our attention including the new Littletopia section of of the fair that included art from a genre often not seen at this particular fair. Take a look at some of the highlights (like the barbed wire slippers installation by Tony […]
