Upcoming: “Unpredictable Gravity” @ Roq La Rue

On January 9th, the Roq La Rue gallery will be opening a special show curated by one of our writers Robbie Lowery entitled Unpredictable Gravity. The group exhibition features an incredible lineup of artists who along with the gallery will be donating half the proceeds toward cancer charities. This particular cause has a deep personal meaning to Robbie and it has been amazing the that some of his favorite artists have agreed to participate including Jeremy Geddes, Ashley Wood, Brian Despain, John Brophy, Sail, Camilla D’Errico, Phil Hale, Ross Richmond, Christopher Thompson, Sam Wolfe Connelly, Thomas Doyle, Esao […]

Showing: MOMO – “Butt Joints” @ May Space Gallery

Conceptual street artist MOMO has a new exhibition that just opened in New Orleans gallery May Space. We’re fans of MOMO’s work here at AM for a variety of reasons, but one of them is how successfully his outdoor work and most notably his murals, translate to gallery spaces. Butt Joints takes his expressionist use of colour and form inside for a site specific installation featuring signature elements transposed into three dimensional sculptural objects; married with works on canvas and an installation comprised of grids of […]

Showing: Urs Fischer – “Melodrama” @ Sadie Coles HQ

Currently at the 62 Kingly Street location of Sadie Coles HQ in London, the show Melodrama features an indoor downpouring of oversized plaster raindrops by Urs Fischer. The installation on display mirrors some of the Swiss-born artist’s recent exhibition at the MOCA in Los Angeles, where he also invited his fans to participate in building some of the sculptural work. The indoor storm is suspended over nude headless reclining figures which represent “an earthbound world of disorderly, golem-like forms in contrast with the symphony of […]

Openings: “Winter Group Show” @ Bradbury & Blanchard

Christmas is often an opportune time for galleries to pull out all the stops for blockbuster group exhibitions, and Sheffield’s Bradbury & Blanchard has done just that with their Winter Group Show. The artist run space celebrates the end of its first year in existence with a salon-style exhibition featuring a selection of artists from across the globe and with work across a wide variety of mediums, and in the spirit of Xmas, everything is course for sale and available for immediate pick up. Great for […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Art Basel First Look (Part II)

The “main fair” as it is affectionately called by art lovers in Miami is of course the centerpiece of Art Basel Week. Not just prestigious by namesake or by the list of illustrious galleries, but more so the high level of art exhibited by the artists who want to put forward their best work. As always, it felte like there was so much blue-chip goodness, but so little time at Art Basel. From Kapoor (seen above), Colen, Martin, De Kooning, Chamberlain, Pruitt, Houseago, Creed, Auerbach, Kusama to Longo, just to […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Faile & Bast – “Deluxx Fluxx”

During Art Basel Week, numerous artists trek to Miami to set up artistic pop-up projects. One of our favorites this year was by the Brooklyn-based Faile and Bast. They brought their nostalgic arcade-based exhibition entitled Deluxx Fluxx to entertain both the eyes and souls of patrons that stopped by their fresh throwback arcade. As previewed in our studio visit, this collaborative project with Perrier is now in it’s third iteration (version 1.0 in London & 2.0 in NYC) and it continued to push the envelope. It wasn’t […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Martha Otero @ PULSE

As part of our survey of this year’s Art Basel Week in Miami, we already brought you some highlights from the PULSE art fair. It’s now time to focus in on some of the booths that caught our eye. The Los Angeles-based Martha Otero Gallery’s  booth was filled with some choice work by artists who readers of AM should be familiar with – Jen Stark (seen above), Tim Biskup, Eric White, James Jean, Mars-1, and more… Discuss Art Basel Week Miami here.

Overtime: Dec 9 – Dec 15

More stories from the week that ended Dec 15 (click on bolded words for more information): Do Ho Suh creates a home within a home at the MMCA in South Korea. Adrian Procop, final suspect in Dutch art heist, arrested in Britain. A drug dealer tells what happens in Miami during Art Basel. Jack Armstrong has been accused of drugging and raping a woman after a night out in Beverly Hills. Despite record prices, broader art market is in the doldrums, according to experts who […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: “Affordable Care” @ Mana Wynwood

One of the shows we visited during Art Basel Week was Affordable Care, curated by Flaunt Magazine. Held in the Mana Wynwood complex in Miami’s downtown district, this group exhbition explores the contradiction of the words “affordable” and “care”. This pairing of terms in the current world is sort of an oxymoron in a time of digital missives, healthcare glitches, and artistic free-for-all. The event brought together an interesting mix of artists working with diverse mediums, including photography, digital, performance art. The participants were Ben Jones, Melanie Pullen, […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Art Miami & CONTEXT

As we continue our survey of Art Basel Week in Miami, we turn our eyes to Art Miami and its sister fair CONTEXT. The combined exhibition space of the two events featured over 190 galleries and covered over 200,000 square feet. Strolling through the booths, we found artist new and old that drew our attention. As with last year, there was the controversial display of un-authenticated work purported to be from Banksy presumably from his recent art residency in New York. Enjoy more of our photos below… Discuss Art […]
