Currently at Sprüth Magers, George Condo has a selection of new paintings and sculptures on display, his third solo exhibition in Berlin. The series of large-scale works are are the results of his ongoing reference to art history with the focus this time being Abstraction – i.e.: the lines of de Kooning, the forms and colors of Matisse, Tanguy and Klee, the all-over of Pollock, and Picasso. Last month, the Petaluma Art Center north of San Francisco opened up an exhibition entitled Cosmic Terrain, the brainchild of Mars-1, Damon Soule, and Oliver Vernon. Openings: Richard Colman @ Guerrero Gallery

We last heard from Richard Colman when he showed in Toronto (covered) last year with Andrew Schoultz. This time around, he is showing alongside another talented artist, Alex Lukas (covered), at the Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco. Lukas filled the project room with a selection of paintings and monochromatic works populated by a surreal mix of his hooded figures, nudes, and bears. Patricia Piccinini, the subject of one of our Art Focus features earlier this year, has taken to the skies with her latest work again showcasing her love for the grotesque and her strong imagination. The Skywhale hot air balloon was commissioned for the Centenary of Canberra, and will be floating by different locations in Australia the rest of the year. Wonderful Land marks David Benjamin Sherry’s second solo exhibition at OHWOW and features photographs from the American Western and Southwestern states, taken with a large format, handmade, analog wooden film camera over the course of several months. The artist prints each image in his own darkroom, creating vivid and detailed images with brilliant colors. Streets: Andrew Schoultz (SF)

Andrew Schoultz recently painted this mural in San Francisco on the side of Pop’s Bar on 24th and York Stree in the Mission District. The Victorian style structure was reinvigorated with the locally-based artist’s kinetic imagery including some of the motifs that appear commonly in his work – horses, bricks, telephone poles, and more. As you can see, the work navigated around the various architectural components as well as incorporated some existing graffiti. Discuss Andrew Schoultz here.

Frieze Week NYC ’12: NADA Fair

One of the art fairs that has hitched its wagon to Frieze is that of the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA). This year’s NADA fair moved to a new spacious location on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and presented a nice range of emerging and mid-career artists. Booths that caught our eye included LA’s M+B, showing Jessica Eaton (seen above) and Toronto’s Cooper Cole showing Georgia Dickie and Lauren Luloff. Over the weekend, fans of Alex Lukas in the Bay Area saw the return of the Philadelphia-based artist to Guerrero Gallery with a new solo show. Along with what was seen during our studio visit with Lukas featuring his signature dsytopian imagery and submerged cities, the fresh pieces also included some interesting new developments.
