Recently, the Merry Karnowsky gallery presented new artwork by Edward Walton Wilcox. Titled Though You Slay Me, the show featured a number of oil paintings which focused on Wilcox’s use of the chiaroscuro effect to create a series of gloomy portraits and environments. Also on display were a collection of sketches which incorporate his style and technique but in a different size and format. A couple Saturdays ago, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City hosted the opening for Wild at Heart, a benefit show where some of the proceeds went towards Born Free USA. The group exhibition featured artists and their choice of endangered species to paint or work with leading to some great pieces being created. On Tuesday night, Los Angeles showgoers got their midweek art fix at Stephen Webster when the City of Fire exhibition was unveiled. With pieces filling the walls from Cyrcle., Thomas Doyle, Ron English, James Jean, Kid Zoom, Dave Kinsey, MARS-1, Patrick Martinez, Pedro Matos, REVOK, Rostarr, Andrew Schoultz, SABER, Jeff Soto, Judith Supine, TrustoCorp, Mark Dean Veca, Nick Walker, and Adam Wallacavage as well as free-flowing drinks courtesy of Kanon Vodka, a good time was had by all. Do Ho Suh – “Fallen Star” for UCSD’s Stuart Collection

Tomorrow in San Diego, Do Ho Suh’s Fallen Star finally opens at UCSD’s Jacobs Hall at the Jacobs School of Engineering. The project from the famed Korean sculptor, which is the 18th permanent sculpture commissioned by UCSD’s Stuart Collection, has been seven years in the making and was funded by $1.3 million in private donations. Recently, the 12th commissioned architectural project of an annual series from the Serpentine Gallery opened to the public. The 2012 piece was a collaboration between famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and Herzog & de Meuron, the same team that was responsible for the celebrated Beijing National Stadium which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games.
