One of the biggest benefits for artists participating in the annual Baby Tattooville celebration is having their work exhibited in the Riverside Art Museum for all to see even after the exclusive weekend festivities end (you have about five weeks – until Nov. 8 – to catch show). On Thursday night, AM attended Ron English’s (featured) latest exhibit entitled English 101 at the Post No Bills Gallery. The exhibit featured limited edition prints, hand finished multiples, toys and other artwork that displayed the artist’s unique design and sense of humor. Having recently been turned on to Lola Dupré’s work, we were excited to hear that the Glasgow based collage artist has an upcoming solo exhibition at Phone Booth Gallery in Long Beach. Entitled Shrapnel, the exhibition will showcase Lola’s ‘exploding’ portraits of icons taken from popular culture, movie starlets and fellow artists as her subject matter. Since the Gagosian Gallery opened a branch in Hong Kong earlier this year, some international heavy hitters like Damien Hirst and Richard Prince have already graced their walls with solo shows. For their most recent exhibition, which opened a couple weeks ago, a more local star, Zeng Fanzhi, was the feature attraction. The retrospective draws from work in the last 20 years with some pieces culled from the Chinese artist’s personal collection, tracing his career of exploring the human figure with his powerfully introspective paintings. AM recently witnessed the return of Lisa Yuskavage to David Zwirner as the New York based artist unveiled a new series of paintings in her third show with the gallery since 2006. Seen were her classic female nudes depicted in cartoonish yet erotic compositions. The color palettes she selected were vibrant, rich and diverse which complimented her wide selection of environments well. Earlier this week, Elms Lesters hosted the opening for a set of new works collectively and aptly entitled Dimensional Paintings from the inventive Adam Neate (interviewed). While his landmark solo in 2009 at the same London gallery introduced his fans to the new textures and three-dimensional aspects of his new work, this latest exhibition shows a maturity, refinement, and comfort in the technique that is evident in the impressive depth and complexity of the pieces currently on view. PULSE Los Angeles ’11: Joshua Liner Gallery

After giving you an overview of the inaugural PULSE Los Angeles fair earlier in the week, we now focus in on a couple of the individual booths. First up is New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery, who was mainly representing Kris Kuksi and his intricate assemblages, Greg Lamarche (interviewed) who worked on a mural for the event, and Dave Kinsey who also painted an impressive wall at the Standard while in town. Mallick Williams led off the art season with solo exhibition recently with a show coinciding with the 9/11 tragedy by New York contemporary artist Erik Foss. The show entitled Avarice is a series of over 80 abstract paintings featuring challenging tha status quo notions of propriety and function between the worlds of high art and downtown culture.
