Just this past Friday night, Ryan McGinness started to hit his stride as he continued on to the middle part of his tour of LA. The special book signing, barbecue, exhibition of sketches, and lecture all rolled into one was held at Giant Robot 2 on Sawtelle street. AM will have more for you as we continue coverage of the NY-based artist’s slate of shows as we move into early June. More photos courtesy of Brandon Shigeta after the jump…

Openings: Kent Williams – “Convergence” @ Merry Karnowsky (Los Angeles)

Last weekend, the talented Kent Williams presented his new body of work entitled Convergence at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. His set of oil paintings, some large scale, displayed a keen sense of the human form and bring to mind classical live painting but with a contemporary twist. As with some of his recent work, there appeared to be some Far East influence in terms of choice of subjects, costumes, and composition. Take a look at all the art and opening photos after the […]

Openings: John Chamberlain @ Pace Gallery

We recently went by Pace Gallery to see sculptor John Chamberlain’s 13th and final solo with the gallery (he recently left to become represented by Gagosian). Chamberlain has made his 50-year career by creating large-scale painted metal sculptures—typically out of car parts—which bring to mind three-dimensional abstract expressionist paintings. His current exhibition with Pace consists of more than a dozen such sculptures from the 1980s through the 2000s and is showing through July 1. Take a look at images from the show, after the jump.

Highlights: ArtPadSF, San Francisco

San Francisco, last weekend, hosted a slew of fine art fairs around the city. One noteworthy fair was the inaugural edition of ArtPadSF (held at the legendary Phoenix Hotel in the Tenderloin), which focused mainly on Bay Area galleries that feature contemporary and emerging art. Each room of the hotel featured a different gallery’s display and the lounge played host to panel discussions on art. Some of the galleries that had a room at the fair included: White Walls, Gallery Anno Domani, 111 Minna, Spoke […]

Art HK ’11: Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin

As you knew from our teaser article, we were looking forward to the Emmanuel Perrotin booth at Art Hong Kong because of what KAWS had to offer.  But, turns out the gallery was showing many other artists from their roster including AM favorites like Takashi Murakami, Mr., Chiho Aoshima, and Aya Takano among many others. More photos courtesy of Jasper Wong (POW WOW) after the jump…

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Trophies” @ PRISM

Last night, PRISM filled its spacious gallery rooms with Trophies, the fourth in a series of shows from Ryan McGinness. As with the other Los Angeles exhibitions we have already covered (Michael Kohn & Country Club), this showing centered around a theme – gold sculptural pieces based on his Women series or works. Along with some wall murals, these 3-dimensional representations from the NY-based artist are taken from his deconstruction of the female form. More opening pics after the jump from Brandon Shigeta.

Showing: Glenn Brown @ Galerie Max Hetzler

Those currently in Berlin would be well advised to make it over to Galerie Max Hetzler as they are set to close on a fantastic new body of work from Glenn Brown.  The Turner Prize nominated English artist, known for reinterpreting others works with his bold color choices and swirling brushwork, also has some of his “painted sculptures” on display at the show (part of Gallery Weekend Berlin) While staring at each painting, one can’t help but find your attention is drawn to each individual […]

Art HK ’11 – James Jean @ Martha Otero

Using a unique four panel painting (previewed) contrasted nicely against a mural backdrop as the anchoring point in the booth, Martha Otero continued to supply fans of James Jean’s (featured) work more eye candy – this time at Art Hong Kong. Also included in the display were more paintings, drawings, special limited editions, and a first look at his Rebus book (more on this later), which was also the title of his recent exhibition at the Los Angeles showspace. Take a look at more pics […]
