The last time we were at the Brooklyn Museum, we were taking in Takashi Murakami’s Retrospective (covered). It looks like Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) has just released a new print with Modern Multiples (who we visited last November) in an edition of 36. Entitled “As Cold As They Come”, our readers may remember the image from Mark’s show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (covered) last September. In what sounds like an eternity in the fast-moving and evolving world of contemporary art, Blaine Fontana has just opened his first gallery exhibition in 3 years. He returns with a tightly constructed, cohesive body of work with a unified theme. The solo exhibition at LeBasse Projects in Culver City features 13 paintings, using acrylic and almost entirely on board, all intricately and exquisitely rendered by the Otis graduate. AM was on hand to document the creation of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) latest outdoor project on the mural space hosted by Deitch Projects at the corner of Manhattan’s prime Houston & Bowery Street. As teased, the final product was true to the preview image which we first released. Armed with cans of spray paint, vats of wheat paste and a few “cherry pickers”, the Obey crew (Dan, Nick and Zee) braved the unexpected downpours to build this tremendous new mural. Openings – New Directions @ White Walls

Opening alongside “Meticulous Engagements” at the Shooting Gallery was White Walls’ “New Directions” a group show consisting of five talents that the gallery has been building this past year. Featuring Mark Warren Jacques (pictured above), Henry Gunderson (interviewed), Akira Beard, Robert Burden, and Cheryl Molnar. New Directions is a look at several distinctly different and unique styles each exploring their own directions. Full photo set after the jump.

Sometimes, we get spoiled at AM with behind the scenes studio visits where we see much of the art work before show openings, but in this case, our visit to David Choe’s (featured) studio definitely did not spoil our appetite for his latest series of works which were revealed at a private opening last night. Los Angeles leads the worldwide charge this weekend with a slew of simply massive shows going off. From the return of David Choe at Lazarides’ Beverly Hills pop-up space and Phil Frost’s much anticipated LA solo debut at Known Gallery to a very ambitious show at Scion curated by Roger Gastman, LA is the place to be yet again this weekend.
