Basel Week Miami ‘09 – Regen Projects @ Art Basel

We are not kidding when we say that there was a massive amount of art to be seen and shown from Miami during Art Basel Week.  Continuing with our coverage, we are proud to show you the booth of Regen Projects, one of the most prestigious galleries, not only in Los Angeles, but internationally.  Its stable of artists would make just about any other gallery insane with jealousy and collectors drool.  It includes the top-tier, from John Currin, Richard Prince, Anish Kapoor, and Matthew Barney, […]

Rumor Mill: Deitch to head MOCA?

Some interesting chatter coming out ahead of the press conference on Monday to announce the Los Angeles MOCA’s new director. One of the top candidates is none other than Jeffrey Deitch, whose booth we recently visited at Art Basel Miami. If he’s confirmed (he’s got a good shot, seeing Eli Broad is probably backing him, two major galleries in LA back him – Javier Peres of Peres Projects and Blum & Poe, and his gallery confirms Deitch is in LA right now for “meetings”), it […]

Teaser: Mike Shine @ SF MoMA

Following his recent recreations of his historic Art Shack at Art Basel Miami and the Museum of Craft and Folk Art earlier this year, Mike Shine starts off 2010 proper with yet another installation, this time at the prestigious SF MoMA.  Debuting on the eve of their 75th Anniversary Show, the “Mike Shine Show” will run from January 16th to the 17th.  Mike recently sent us a couple photos of the mural he’s working on, see the second process pic after the jump.

Tomorrow night, the Joshua Liner Gallery will host “Further,” a group exhibition featuring works by artists Damon Soule, David Choong Lee, MARS-1, Nome Edonna, Oliver Vernon, Robert Hardgrave and Tomokazu Matsuyama. The exhibition coincides with the release of a new book of the same name that brings together the seven artists and their varied takes on contemporary abstraction, mysticism, futurism, and surrealism. Ron English x Simpsons Episode

Looks like the animated world of TV and our art world collide again (see Souther Salazar x Family Guy & Shepard Fairey x South Park). This time, it’s Ron English (featured) commissioned to create a variation on his Homer/Jackson Pollock motif – in 10 seconds. Make sure you check out The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special — In 3-D! On Ice!, airing this Sunday, January 10 on Fox. Via Ron English Juxtapoz Blog. Discuss Ron English here.

“At Work” with Jeff Koons

Artinfo has an interesting article that gives a insider look into Jeff Koons’ studio and more importantly, some insight into the man himself. The article was written by Samantha Peale who worked under Koons as an assistant. Her story definitely gave us more of an appreciation for Koons creative process and his art. A short excerpt: Koons had a sixth sense about materials no one had invented and about ways to use them no one had conceived. Laser-cut stainless steel coated with a transparent hologram […]

Preview: “Know New York” @ Cinders

Brooklyn’s one-and-only Cinders will start off the decade tomorrow by taking a new look at artists living and working in “the city that never sleeps” in their show entitled “Know New York.” Artist and Cinders cofounder Sto took on the role of curator and handpicked the varied and impressive roster, which features Diane Barcelowsky, Hisham Bharoocha, Robin Cameron, Raul Denieves, Andrew Guenther, Maya Hayuk, Eli Lehrhoff, Dennis McNett, Cameron Michel, Leif Parsons, Carly Rabalais, Johnathan Rosen, Leif Ritchey, Ryan Wallace and Eric White (interviewed). Check […]

Mars-1 x Oliver Vernon x Damon Soule Collaboration

What do you get when you put three artists together over Halloween weekend and let them all work on one painting together?  A pretty intense collaboration… Often times when artists work on the same canvas, what initially may have seemed like a good idea may not turn out as well as one would hope.  Discordant styles, varying familiarity with different mediums, and differing artistic visions can all be detrimental to the final result. We have witnessed much of the maneuvering and politics of this interaction […]

Teaser: Kenichi Yokono @ 2x2projects, Amsterdam

In our recent recap of Kenichi Yokono at Pulse Miami, we lamented the fact that audiences outside of LA and Tokyo rarely get the chance to see this talented artists’ work firsthand. Well, this Friday, Europeans will get one of those rare chances when Amsterdam’s 2x2projects hosts the artist’s latest solo show. And from the looks of the above teaser image, it seems that Yokono is continuing with his new black and red style and may show darker and edgier imagery than what we saw […]
