Openings: Jedediah Voltz – “Somewhere Small” @ Virgil Normal

Back in April, Virgil Normal in Los Angeles hosted a brief showing of miniature “tree” houses from Jedediah Voltz. His whimsical structures embedded in the branches of common household plants (such as succulents) featured a high level of detail to include tiny furniture, pots, rugs, and other accessories. As a creative outlet for his commercial prop making experience, the series of tiny domiciles is obviously a labor of love, something his audience appreciated leading to an almost sold out opening night. Further expanding his reach into Asia, KAWS will be opening up a new project at Central Embassy in Bangkok at the end of this month. Teaming up with curator AllRightsReserved again, the New York-based artist will be introducing what looks to be his sculptural version of Elmo remixed with his signature companion treatment at the architecturally stunning luxury retail & hotel complex. Last month, Felipe Pantone visited Paris in order to create his contribution to the ongoing Lasco Project curated by Hugo Vitrani for Palais De Tokyo. Following the work from Stelios Faitakis, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine, Philippe Baudelocque, JR and Os Gemeos for the project, the prolific Argentinian-born artist and his team painted an impressive installation in the tunnel of the A86 Duplex, between Rueil-Malmaison in Vélizy, west of Paris. Victoria Miro in London is currently hosting a new exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Yayoi Kusama. Spanning the gallery’s three locations and waterside garden, the exhibition features new paintings, pumpkin sculptures, and immersive room experiences, all made especially for this showing. This is the artist’s most extensive exhibition at the gallery to date, and it is the first time mirror rooms have gone on view in London since Kusama’s major retrospective at Tate Modern in 2012. Hot Tea x Bon Iver @ Sydney Opera House

Last week, American indie folk band Bon Ivor performed at the Sydney Opera House under a large suspended installation by Hot Tea. The Minneapolis-based artist, known for his yarn-based work, created a stunning hanging installation that changed colors and imagery when viewed in conjunction with projection, a collaborative project entitled Circle. Coming up this weekend, KAWS will be presenting new works to his fans in Korea at Galerie Perrotin’s new outpost. The newly opened space (1F 5 PALPAN-GIL, JONGNO-GU) will be the setting for the New York-based artist’s first visit to Seoul City. Look for more paintings featuring his continually evolving abstractions of his favorite cartoon, comic, and pop culture inspired characters. The show runs from June 2nd to August 27th. Patrick Martinez’s recent works includes what he calls the Po-lice Misconduct Misprint series, a riff on the Pee Chee Folders of the ’70s and ’80s.
