Releases: Glenn Barr – “Otaku Print Set”

Currently available through July 10th, an “Otaku Print Set” featuring the work of Glenn Barr is available at 1xRUN. Compiling four 11 x 13″ prints together (Used Heroes, Godzilla’s Ghost, Astro Defiance, Monster Zero), the Detroit-based artist has created images that fanboys will instantly notice with characters like Astroboy, Ultraman, and Godzilla populating his surreal world. As part of the second New York edition of Condo, a gallery share program conceived of as an alternative to the traditional art fair, Nanzuka Gallery from Tokyo will opening a show at Petzel Gallery (35 E 67th Street location) on June 29th. The resulting three person exhibition (also featuring Makoto Taniguchi & Mori Masato), sees Haroshi (featured) putting 29 of his half kaiju half wood monsters on display. Hand crafted from skatedecks, the sculptures from the Japanese artist always have a distinctive look and certainly make an impressive looking installation. Via Hypebeast. Discuss Haroshi here.

This Saturday (June 23rd), Jonathan LeVine Projects in New Jersey will be presenting the insanely detailed drawings of Ben Tolman in a solo show. Working with both geometric forms and urban sprawl, the Washington D.C.-based artist creates frenetic compositions that will introduce you to some new intriguing new element with each viewing. Earlier this month, Scott Listfield’s ALGORITHM opened at Spoke Art in San Francisco, continuing to document the post-apocalyptic journeys of his reoccurring astronaut character. As with most of his shows, the Massachusetts-based painter presented a versatile body of work strongly influenced by where he was exhibiting. As such, his spacesuit wearing protagonist can be seen with Bay Area landmarks in the backdrop as well as interacting with drones, self driving vehicles, robots and other tech. Art loving feline fans rejoice, for the third edition of The Cat Art Show is returning to Los Angeles. The biennial exhibition is once again at Think Tank Gallery and will run from June 14 to June 24. Tonight (June 11th) at 10 PM EST, Gary Baseman (interviewed) will be releasing a figure through APPortfolio entitled Ahwroo. The sculptural edition (run of 300) of hand painted polystone measures 21 x 29 x 16.5cm and will cost $340 for those interested. Baseman states – “Ahwroo, my vicious creature, is so hungry for affection, he can draw blood and kill the object of his affection. Releases: James Jean – “Sun Tarot” Print

Tomorrow (June 12th) starting at 8:00 AM PDT, James Jean (interviewed) will be making a new print available for 24 hours only. Entitled Sun Tarot, this time-limited giclee comes with gold foil accents and custom designed embossments and of course will be signed and numbered. Measuring 27″ tall × 19-1/2″ wide (image size 23-3/4 ″ tall × 17″ wide), this edition based on a painting (seen below) from James’ recent show in Japan (covered) will be available here starting at the appropriate time. Recap: Anthony Iacono – “Talking to Strangers” @ P·P·O·W

Closing at the end of last month in New York, Anthony Iacono’s show at P·P·O·W intrigued us with his provocative subject matter as well as technique. While many of the New York-based artist’s pieces seem to be referencing BDSM fantasies (some more directly with colorful renderings of kinky scenes and some more subtle by incorporating rope or cords into the compositions), the imagery is tempered by his dark humor and the way he never expands the viewer’s field of vision to take in the entire spectacle. Continuing his annual showings at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be returning for another solo on June 23rd. Cleverly entitled Glazed Machinations, the new body of work perfectly encapsulates what inspires him to paint – robots and donuts. Whether it be his signature Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots or incorporating the iconic Randy’s Donuts into his imagery, Joyner always finds novel new adventures for his two “muses” as well as unique ways for them to interact.
