Basel Week ’10 Pulse Miami First Look

Thursday morning, AM attended the private preview brunch at Pulse Miami, and with cappuccino and croissant in hand, got a first look at the fair’s impressive selection. The energy was high as eager collectors of emerging and established art filled the venue, and it wasn’t long until red dots began popping up beside snatched-up works throughout the show. With the pleasure of attending the event together with Shepard Fairey and his family, AM headed over to the opening of Small Gift Miami (previewed) for a bit of cross-generational fun during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Sanrio. Tony Shafrazi’s booth was one of the first ones we made a beeline to when we entered the main fair at Art Basel. As advertised, our attention was dominated by Robert Williams’ newest sculpture, The Brain Trap, which we can fully reveal now. This was surrounded by other paintings from Williams along with the Diamond in a Goat’s Ass sculpture, and work by Dennis Hopper, and Ed Ruscha. More photos after the jump…

If you need something to look forward to once the Art Basel festivities are over with, look no further than the following weekend at Jonathan LeVine. Josh Agle (SHAG) (interviewed) will be opening his third solo exhibition at the NY gallery entitled “Ambergris” featuring over a dozen original acrylic paintings on panel as well as three large-scale giclee editions on canvas. Our friend Jeff Soto’s (featured) just sent over photos of some of his escapades in Miami with his old graffiti partner Maxx242. In town for Art Basel Week (he is painting a mural for Wynwood Walls and is listed for Primary Flight), you can be sure the Sotofish sure knows how to have a good time (see last year). With the release of his regal Snow Yak Print Portfolio (covered) barely in the rear view mirror, Mark Ryden has revealed details for his next release – a set of vinyl toy figures. AM recently attended the opening of Kenny Scharf & Dearraindrop’s Hot Glue Hullabaloo at The Hole Gallery. The collaborative show between Kenny and the Virginia Beach collective was a logical one – both are known for their creative and colorful approaches to create works outside the box. Kenny transformed the inside of The Hole into a replica of the “cosmic cavern” from his home which has the effect of transported viewers back to the happy and trippy days of the 60’s & 70’s.
