Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’10 – Regen Projects & Galerie Klosterfelde

Los Angeles’s own Regen Projects shared a single room with Galerie Klosterfelde from Berlin at the Art Los Angeles Contemporary fair.  The two galleries brought out fantastic pieces from their stable of superstars, including a cluster of drawings by Raymond Pettibon (pictured above), photos by Wolfgang Tillmans from his Lighter series, a Matthew Barney piece, drawings and a window piece by Lawrence Weiner, a spectacular Lari Pittman painting, a large Catherine Opie photo, and sculptures by the always-challenging German artist John Bock. Preview / Interview: Sarah Joncas – “Shadow Play” @ Roq La Rue Gallery

Canadian artist, Sarah Joncas, is set to open her show “Shadow Play” at Seattle’s Roq La Rue gallery this Friday, February 12th. As the title of her show implies, not only will her paintings include the interplay of “shadow” imagery, “play” also references one of her inspirations – film noir and all that comes along with that genre. The soon-to-be graduated art student talks about this and much more in the interview we conducted with her – after the jump…

Preview: Martin Wittfooth – “Tempest” @ Copro Gallery

New York artist Martin Wittfooth’s show “Tempest” is set to open this Saturday night, February 14th in Santa Monica at the Copro Gallery. Known for his vivid paintings of animals, often at their most primal moments, among the rusted and crumbling remnants of human society, Wittfooth will be bringing a new body of work, including sculptures. We love his palette and choice of color – see for yourself first hand this weekend if you are in the area. Wittfooth will be showing alongside Chris Ryniak. […]

Preview: Victor Castillo – “Strange Fruit” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery (Los Angeles)

Showing alongside Miss Van tonight at Merry Karnowsky Gallery is Barcelona-based artist Victor Castillo. He follows up his debut show there last August with a new body of work entitled “Strange Fruit.” His deeply satirical work often takes what initially seem like harmless children – well, sausage nosed children – which on second look are engaged in situations they should not be involved in, with dangerous overtones all around. These children and their supposed innocence are appropriated for his commentary on subjects ranging from politics […]

Highlights: Recommended openings for Feb 3 – Feb 7

One month in and the art world is in full gear as we kick off the month of February. There are literally dozens of amazing noteworthy shows going off this weekend and next the world over. Two of the shows we’re most excited about here at AM is the return of David Choe (featured) to SF this Friday at FIFTY24SF and the west coast solo debut from Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (featured) at Frey Norris, also in SF… so needless to say SF is the place […]

Openings: Sas & Colin Christian – “Inner Space” @ Opera Gallery (London)

AM dropped into Colin and Sas Christian’s debut UK show opening last night at Opera Gallery’s London location. When we first saw the preview images, which we showed you here, from husband and wife Colin and Sas, we knew that this would be be a must see show. Both artists had taken things to another level in terms of the scale that they worked to – Sas going big on canvas and Colin going supersize with his sculptures, the largest of the pieces being around 9 […]

Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’10 – Otero Plassart

As AM was perusing the various booths at Art Los Angeles Contemporary, we ran into a painting by a instantly recognizable artist, lusted over by many a street art collector. That painting you see above is a 36″x48″ by José Parlá and it was prominently featured at the Otero Plassart booth. After discussing the piece with the gallery representative, we learned that the gallery owners are friends with Mr. Parlá and luckily for Southern California denizens, there is a good chance his artwork could now […]
