David Stoupakis x Joe Hill – “The Fireman” Limited Editions

David Stoupakis was asked recently to work on the limited editions of Joe Hill’s The Fireman book and boy did he deliver. Working in more color than he usually does, the New York-based painter used his artistic vision to beautifully bring to life scenes from the story about a worldwide pandemic of spontaneous combustion. Last week, Joshua Liner Gallery became the venue for Wayne White’s new solo entitled I’M HAVING A DIALOGUE WITH THE UNIVERSE AND YOU’RE JUST SITTING THERE. Transforming the New York showspace by taking over the walls with sculptural cutouts and murals, he then strategically embedded his paintings in place to complete the effect. Previews: Mark Dean Veca – “New Works” @ JAUS

On September 16th, Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) will be opening a two person show (along with Kiel Johnson) in Los Angeles at JAUS. Veca will be contributing some acrylic on canvas works that take his signature pop culture inspired imagery for a twirl. By twisting his subject matter, created with his signature patterns, into clusters of repeating motifs, he seems to bringing further abstraction to his aesthetic. Discuss Mark Dean Veca here.

Upcoming: Atsuko Goto – “An Empty Idol” @ Lower Akihabara

Tonight (September 9th) in Tokyo, Atsuko Goto will be opening a new solo show at Lower Akihabara. Entitled An Empty Idol, the exhibition includes ethereal mix-media paintings from the locally-based artist featuring her signatures portraiture which draws inspiration from the Shinto religion. The subjects of the Japanese artist’s imagery are in tune with nature with birds, butterflies, flora, and animals nesting and interacting with their hair and faces. Discuss Atsuko Goto here.

Releases: James Jean – “Chang’e” Print

In celebration of another Chinese holiday (also see CNY), James Jean (interviewed) will be releasing a new print for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Entitled Chang’e, the edition will be time limited for 24 hours from 8:00 AM PDT on Thursday, September 15th and ending at 7:59 AM PDT on Friday, September 16th. One of the events that marked the official opening of this year’s Nuart Festival on the 8th of September was the opening of Jeff Gillette’s solo show at Nuart Gallery. For Dismayland Nord, the Detroit-based artist brought his iconic “dismayland” imagery to the idyllic city of Stavanger in Norway. As it was his first Scandinavian solo, Gillette prepared a brand new body of work for the exhibition. The nasty one, Neck Face (interviewed), recently released a new line of clothing with Guilty Parties of Japan featuring his provocative imagery. Ranging from t-shirts, jackets, hoodies, to Hawaiian shirts, all the different designs can be seen at a special release party coming up in Tokyo on September 9th.
