Showing: Alex Garant – “Reborn In Flesh” @ Supersonic Art Gallery

Popular art blog SupersonicArt recently expanded their activity by launching SupersonicArtGallery.com, as an experimental online space of showcasing new contemporary artists in mini-exhibitions. For their inaugural show, they chose Alex Garant and her five piece series of new paintings titled Reborn in Flesh. After creating and showing colorful creations for about a year (covered) “this transitional mini-series is a display of (her) creative cocoon, a contemplative self-acceptance and the wellspring of a new, more instinctive, era in (her) artwork.” Keeping her well-known “double-eyed” signature look, the new pieces successfully mix clean, white […]

Previews: “Why I Want to Fuck Donald Trump” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On October 13th, Joshua Liner Gallery will be opening a group show entitled Why I Want to Fuck Donald Trump, a title inspired by JG Ballard’s 1967 essay Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan. Curated by Alfred Steiner (who himself contributed grotesque portraits of the candidates created from pornographic images of male and female genitalia in his typical piecemeal style), the exhibition will be sort of a visual discussion of the historic satirical essay but applied to the 2016 presidential election. Exhibiting artists include Aaron Johnson, Alfred […]

On October 15th, beinArt Gallery in Brunswick, Australia will be hosting a three person show entitled Force of Nature. Upcoming: Chris Berens – “Moonrise” @ Megumi Ogita Gallery

On October 14th, Megumi Ogita Gallery in Tokyo will be hosting a new solo from Chris Berens entitled Moonrise. The Dutch artist’s work, influenced by manga & anime, has always appealed to his Japanese fans due to the surreal imagery like it was taken from the latest Final Fantasy montage. Add to that Berens’ special technique of painting on and collaging multiple pieces of photograph paper which lends almost a digital appearance to the pieces and you can see the commonality with local culture that develops. Discuss Chris […]

Previews: Masakatsu Sashie – “External Effect” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Showing concurrently with Glenn Barr’s upcoming solo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery starting October 15th will be an exhibition from Masakatsu Sashie entitled External Effect. The Japanese artist’s work is influenced by the concept of “the balanced aquarium,” described by Nobel Prize winner Konrad Lorenz in his book King Solomon’s Ring: New Light on Animal Ways. Sashie sees parallels between the self-sustaining environment of the fish tank with the world we live in now where we are struggling to maintain stability in our lives while surrounded by consumerism, globalism and environmentalism. These […]

Previews: Glenn Barr – “Invisible World” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

On October 15th, Glenn Barr will be opening a new solo show with Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. The new body of work features paintings that look like stills from old movies created with the Detroit-based artist’s signature pulp art aesthetic. Continuing to explore some of his favorite subjects like retro space travelers and hauntingly beautiful women inspired from cult films of the 1960s and 70s, Barr has prepared compositions on paper and wood for the exhibition.  Barr further states – “Fiction. Written on the page or visualized […]

On October 15th, Mark Ryden (interviewed) will be opening a show at Hidari Zingaro, the gallery of Takashi Murakami who has been a long time fan of his work. Diversiform will only be an exhibition of rare editions from the veteran of the lowbrow movement, but will give fans in Tokyo a rare opportunity to see his imagery in person. The exhibition will run through the 1st of November. Discuss Mark Ryden here.

Openings: Allison Sommers & Ozabu – “Bruxism” & “彷徨 (Wander)” @ Thinkspace

A couple weekends ago, Allison Sommers (interviewed) & Ozabu opened their shows at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Bruxism in the main space was an immersive solo from Sommers featuring her increasingly abstracted meaty subject matter at times housed in various paraphernalia, completed by an installation that was like a record of how the new pieces were conceived and completed. In the project room, Ozabu presented nine new works collectively entitled 彷徨 (Wander), her debut solo with the gallery, with details that need to be seen in person to be appreciated.
