Openings: Amy Sol – “The Wilderness Buffet” @ Copro Gallery

We stopped by to check out the opening of Amy Sol’s (interviewed) show “The Wilderness Buffet” in the large room at Copro Gallery last weekend. While taking in Sol’s new body of work, one can’t help but get drawn into her world of soft colors and and serene landscapes. We couldn’t take our eyes off “Sea Ice Caravel” (above), one of her largest paintings to date and a prime example of the increased detail Sol has put into the pieces for this show. It’s also […]

Preview: Steve “ESPO” Powers @ White Walls

ESPO (Steve Powers) has been getting busy in San Francisco in preparation for his show at White Walls Gallery (teased). Our friends at Shooting Gallery shared some pics of the ever intellectual and prolific Brooklyn street artist working neck-deep to transform the gallery into his own urban billboard. The show opens tomorrow (November 14th) so if you have a chance to stop by, it will be well worth it. As usual count on AM for on-site coverage.

Video / Preview: Jeremy Asher Lynch – “Natural Wonders” @ LeBasse Projects

Artist and videographer Jeremy Asher Lynch is participating in a three person show tonight entitled “Natural Wonders” at LeBasse Projects along with James Roper and Kevin E. Taylor. Jeremy, who also runs Modus Films, produced a video from his “A Fly on the Wall” series where we take a look into his everyday life as he prepares for this show. Some preview images from the show after the jump…

Studio Visit: Jason Vivona

Last week, AM visited the studio of Jason Vivona as he was preparing for his first San Francisco solo show opening today at Gallery Six.  If you’re not aware, Gallery Six is the pet project of Jillian Mackintosh, whom you may recognize from White Walls, the Shooting Gallery and Juxtapoz. For the last few months, Jillian has been using Gallery Six as a launching pad for some of the west coast’s most exciting up-and-coming artists.  Jason Vivona, who recently moved to the Bay Area from […]

Openings: Barry McGee & Phil Frost – “Mind the Gap” @ Prism

During a special preview event last night, Prism opened its doors for the first time with “Mind the Gap,” a show featuring Barry Mcgee and Phil Frost. With its impressive architecture, prime rooftop terrace, unbeatable location, and top notch art – in one night, the new gallery, and it’s co-owners Jared Najjar and PC Valmorbida have positioned themselves to be power players in the Los Angeles art world. The owners, inspired by the New York art scene, are seeking to replicate the hip, young, and […]

Highlights: Recommended openings for Nov 13 – 14

Yet another BIG weekend of art happenings is upon us. The art world has been on fire since things kicked back into high gear this past September and the landmark shows just keep coming. Leading the charge this weekend is the big Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary show in downtown Los Angeles. If you are in a place where there’s no show this weekend, you can still support a great cause and be a part of one of the biggest gatherings of artistic force in sometime. Get […]

Armsrock for Glow 2009

Armsrock (interviewed) has put up an interesting installation for this year’s GLOW – International Forum of Light in Art and Architecture in the Netherlands. A series of 18 x 18 cm photo-slides which engravings he did with an etching needle were then projected with Pani projectors through out the city of Eindhoven.  More images after the jump…

Preview: Tim Biskup – “I Hate Everyone But You” @ Barracuda

Perhaps inspired by the recent Astro Boy movie, Tim Biskup has painted the robot hero in his signature multi-faceted style for his show “I Hate Everyone But You” opening tomorrow night at De La Barracuda. Biskup’s first show in LA since 2007 will be somewhat of an retrospective but also include new pieces like the one above and a “Darth Vader” piece seen after the jump. Also making an appearance will be multiple sculptural pieces as well as prints from his friend Matt Goldman (from MFG).

Openings: Stella Im Hultberg – “Penumbra” @ Copro Gallery

Last weekend, after a nice Izakaya dinner with the artists, the AM crew headed over to Copro Gallery for the three person show (Stella Im Hultberg, Amy Sol, and Nicoletta Ceccoli).  Stella flew all the way from New York to attend the show and brought with her a new darker and more brooding body of work. The paintings were all on paper including a couple larger ones we especially liked with a darkened backdrop and hidden faces. Often times, an artist’s work is influenced by […]

Streets: Blu in Bogota

Blu is one of those street artists that always makes an effort to create pieces that are socially relevant to the area he is working in (ie Milan and Taranto). Combine this with superior artistic skills, his flair for black humor, and an imagination that knows no limits, it’s no surprise he has become the superstar that he is today. Here we see his newest piece put up in Bogota, Colombia for “Memoria Canalla.” Don’t you love the imagery of a credit card getting a […]
