Preview: Laurie Lipton @ Novas Contemporary Urban Centre

One of the most detailed and imaginative artists when it comes to “drawing” with pencil and charcoal, Laurie Lipton is about to open a show today in Liverpool at the Novas Contemporary Urban Centre. Entitled “Homotoptia,” the show is named after Liverpool’s annual celebration of Queer Culture. We are looking forward to this new body of work as Lipton’s work has a interesting new industrial look to it. More after the jump.

Studio Visits: Jeremy Fish

The other day, AM had the pleasure of visiting the North Beach, San Francisco studio of Jeremy Fish as he was putting the final touches on his upcoming museum show, “Weathering the Storm.” Fish, whose instantly recognizable illustrations and paintings are a veritable ark of silly pink bunnies, a parliament of strigiformes and a cable car crammed with weathered prospectors, has been working around the clock for the better part of the last four months creating an entirely new body of work for his first […]

Videos: Craola – “The Pearl Thief” @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

As you can imagine, we are pretty excited about Greg Simkins’ (interviewed) show tomorrow; especially after getting a glimpse at the body of work during our studio visit. The show opening at Gallery1988 (LA) entitled “The Pearl Thief” is about a monster who travels the globe stealing people’s imaginations – “pearls,” if you will. To get an even better idea about the show check out the video above and after the jump… Also, according to Jensen, “the art show will also be an interactive experience, […]

Preview: “Go Get Your Shinebox” @ Brooklynite Gallery

Brooklynite Gallery has a pretty interesting show opening on the 21st of this month entitled “Go Get Your Shinebox.” Artists were asked to create their vision of what a “shoeshine box” was, the simplest way to make a living during the economic downturn and perhaps even take a step further to create “survival boxes.” With such a open ended theme show, you can expect a varied response with boxes of all shapes and sizes. Take a look at more after the jump…

After previewing some of Nicoletta Ceccoli’s (interviewed) pieces in the fantastic upcoming three-person show at Copro Gallery, we turn to Amy Sol (interviewed) and her “Wilderness Buffet.” She’ll be bringing some of her largest works to date as well as some hand finished prints for her part in this Saturday’s show. In addition to incorporating some new elements to her signature palette, Sol fans will be happy to see that she has painted some of her most imaginative and detailed pieces yet. We stopped by recently to visit with Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) and to take a look at some of the pieces he’s been working for the “Go East” pop up show (Nov. 5-7, 1-6pm) this week in New York. Combine the images here with what you saw him working on during the “Reverse Studio Visit” at Baby Tattooville and you will get a pretty good idea of what to expect from the show which also includes Tessar Lo, Edwin Ushiro, Joao Ruas, Eric Fortune (interviewed), Mia […]

Openings: Robert Williams – “In the Service of the Hypothetical” @ Tony Shafrazi Gallery

AM attended the long awaited return of the legendary figure — it was everything we hoped for and more! Many of the notables who made it out for last night’s Stages exhibition (here) were in attendance, along with some of art’s household names, who also came out to pay homage to one of the founding fathers of the movement. Ever friendly and gracious, Robert took time to greet […]

Openings: “The Kids Are Alright” @ LeBasse Projects

We were pleasantly surprised the other day when we stopped by for the opening of Nate Frizzell’s show at LeBasse Projects. Showing concurrently in the smaller gallery was “The Kids Are Alright,” essentially the younger up-and-coming talent of the LeBasse family – artists like Dominique Fung, Jeremy Asher Lynch, and Nimit Malavia. Take a look at all the pics after the jump…
