Previews: Audrey Kawasaki – “Interlude” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Saturday night (November 12th) in Culver City, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show at Thinkspace Gallery entitled Interlude. The new paintings feature a bolder yet still muted palette along with a more erotically-charged narrative for her  beautifully rendered female characters. An expert at coaxing her ethereal muses out from the wood grain with her oil paints, the locally-based artist has assembled a stunning collection of vulnerable yet provocative female subjects for her fans in Los Angeles. Discuss Audrey Kawasaki here. Discuss this show here.

Openings: 1010 – “Eversion” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last weekend, Hashimoto Contemporary welcomed in the Hamburg-based 1010 for a solo showing at their San Francisco space entitled Eversion. Mirroring his aesthetic on the streets, the German artist created a series of colorful portals, formed with graduated layers of paint on acrylic glass and mounted on aluminum dibond. When seen in public, 1010’s work has a powerful illusory effect, making the viewer see a large crevice or hole on the side of a building. This same effect, to a lesser extent, can be experienced from his gallery pieces […]

Streets: D*Face // The Unexpected 2016 (Fort Smith) – Part I

Following up on a mural he painted last year for the The Unexpected event in Fort Smith, Arkansas, D*Face (interviewed) returned for a companion piece. For this year’s edition (curated again by Just Kids), the British artist painted a Indian warrior pulling back on her bow which pairs nicely with 2015’s cowboy themed piece. Entitled Warpaint, this wall will soon be supplemented by an impressive installation (more on that later in Part 2). Photo credit: Just Kids, The Unexpected, D*Face, and @eltipoese. Upcoming: Brad Kunkle – “In/visible” @ Arcadia Contemporary

This Saturday night (November 12th) in Culver City, Arcadia Contemporary will be unveiling a new solo from Brad Kunkle entitled In/visible. For his first West Coast exhibition, the Brooklyn-based painter has prepared a series of paintings that highlight his signature combination of oil painting and precious metal gilding giving his works a unique luster and depth. In explaining the new pieces, Kunkle states – “While some of us struggle to be visible, others wish to be invisible… and we have all most likely experienced the desire to be […]

KAWS x Nike: New York Made // Stanton Street Courts

Nike recently unveiled their collaboration with KAWS that kicks off their New York Made campaign. The Brooklyn-based artist designed the graphics for the playing surface for Stanton Street Courts (In Sara D. Roosevelt Park in Manhattan’s Lower East Side), two side by side full basketball courts. He explains – “I always think about when I was young and the things I had interaction with, whether it was skateboard graphics or magazines, and how art reached me. I’ve been conscious of how my work disseminates and reaches people. It […]

Showing: Revok – “SYSTEMS” @ Library Street Collective (Los Angeles)

Only showing through the end of the week is SYSTEMS from Revok at Library Street Collective’s new permanent location in Los Angeles. The collection of 17 new works see the infamous graffiti writer move in a more abstract direction while still maintaining an intriguing conceptual connection with his time on the streets. The exhibition marks a turn away from the increasingly complex wood assemblages he has become known for while heading towards a new freedom of working on canvas. Refreshing old concepts from his artistic roots, he has created […]

Studio Visit: Remi Rough

We stopped by the studio of Remi Rough while he prepared for his upcoming solo show entitled Post at the Speerstra Gallery in Switzerland. Since his first gallery exhibition in 1989, the British artist has successfully transitioned from his early graffiti style to create his own abstract geometrical language, recognisable regardless of its form, whether  large scale murals or gallery works. Opening on the 12th of November, the exhibition will feature nineteen new works on paper and canvas. Remi Rough will redefine the idea of space and invite the viewer […]

Upcoming: Joe Sorren – “from Inside” @ KP Projects

On November 12th, Joe Sorren (featured) will be opening a new show at KP Projects in entitled from Inside. Fans in Los Angeles will get a rare chance to witness the Madrid-based artist’s masterful brushwork and complex layers of his surreal imagery, full of vibrant colors and emotive energy. He further explains the new paintings – “When approaching this body of work, I was interested in playing with the dichotomy between application of paint as well the imagery that evolves from that application. Because brushstrokes are tiny […]

Openings: “Juxtapoz x Superflat” @ Vancouver Art Gallery

Three months since its debut at the Seattle Art Fair (covered), the Juxtapoz x Superflat group show co-curated by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco and Takashi Murakami opened on the November 5th at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Staying on view until February 5th, the programming included a mixture of talks, lectures, tours, and special guests. The original idea of the showcase was to expand Takashi’s original Superflat theory by including the artists who have been in the pages of the popular arts & culture magazine for the last 22 years. Building on what was on view in Seattle, this showing further […]
