LA Art Show ’16: Recap

Last week, the LA Art Show was in town for another go around bringing in more than 120 galleries representing 22 countries. The 2016 edition was the 21st iteration of the fair, but third year for a special section of the event entitled Littletopia (see 2014, 2015). Our coverage will mainly focus on this area, led off by the Jeff Gillette designed entrance inspired by his participation in Banksy’s Dismaland. Photo credit: Birdman Photos.

Previews: Alex Garant – “Wakefulness” @ Spoke Art

Coming up on February 4th, Spoke Art Gallery will be opening a new show from Alex Garant entitled Wakefulness. The Toronto-based painter is known for her double-exposed portraiture, lending a surreal quality to her subjects. This fresh collection of paintings utilizes a over-saturated vivid palette, part of her goal to overstimulate the viewer with her imagery. She further explains this new body of work – “I went through a big introspection as I was started Wakefulness. It has been suggested that human beings are not awake […]

Streets: ROA (Bangkok)

Currently in Bangkok, the BUKRUK Urban Arts Festival has seen a steady stream of street artists arrive to leave their mark on the capital city. One of these is ROA, who is painting across the way from Aryz (more on his mural later), and with his usual practice, choosing to use local creatures as his inspiration. The Belgium-based artist’s decision was easy of course, placing two iconic Thai elephants balanced on top of each other as well as cleverly resting their feet on some architectural elements. Art Focus: Benjamin Garcia

The next artist we want to share with you in our Art Focus series is Benjamin Garcia and his series of textured portraits. The Venezuelan artist’s multi-layered technique is utilized perfectly to render the disjointed transition between the conscious and the unconscious and seems also to reveal some of the inner psyches of his subjects. He currently has some of his oil paintings on view with Smash Gallery at the LA Art Show and has contributed something to the upcoming 3rd annual POW! WOW! Exploring The New Contemporary […]

Streets: Lonac (Zagreb)

Following in the footsteps of innovative artists before him like Blu & INSA, Lonac has created an animated piece in Zagreb, Croatia. Painted by the locally-based artist in a secret location, the detailed heart has blood pumping through (although in the wrong direction). The reason may be revealed at later time as he promises what he has unveiled is part of a much bigger project. Via StreetArtNews. Discuss Lonac here.

Dan May – “Daily Creature Project”

The Daily Creature Project is a continuing series of studies that Dan May (interviewed) has been creating every day. Each one features one of the surreal, hairy subjects that the northern Michigan-based artist has been known to paint. The drawings are then posted to his online shop at a random time every day and available for purchase immediately. Take a look at some examples below… Discuss Dan May here.
