Basel Week Miami ’15 / Previews: Jeff Gillette // Copro Gallery @ SCOPE

Some 10 days before the official start of Basel Week Miami in Florida, Copro Gallery has introduced two new works by Jeff Gillette, created exclusively for this occasion. The originator of Dismayland concept (covered), created two paintings influenced by his recent participation in Banksy’s Dismaland (covered). The first piece titled Dismaland Castle depicets a post-apocalyptic Dismaland setting. With the infamous torn down Disney castle in the center, WSM seaside in the back, and the entire area being covered with rubbish and slum-like constructions, it looks like a bad case future scenario to say […]

Rewind: Oct 26 – Nov 22

Leading off this latest Rewind feature is a 30 minute documentary on Banksy’s recent Dismaland project (covered). One of the hosts in the video is none other than one of our photographers and writers – Butterfly. Follow her as she walks through the “theme park” and watch the footage as she explains the different installations. Other notable videos include: Pussy Riot’s music video filmed at Banksy’s Dismaland. Jen Stark’s work for MTV and Miley Cyrus. JR joins Pharrell and Scott Vener on OTHERtone. Behind the scenes look […]

Openings: Jeremy Fish – “O Glorious City” @ San Francisco City Hall

It’s always a treat to attend Jeremy Fish (featured) openings. This particular opening was truly special as well. When we arrived at City Hall, an hour before the opening, there was already a long line of the locally-based artist’s devotees. As we walked past the line, we noticed Fish tattoos, t-shirt, hoodies, hats and one guy even had limited edition Fish leather shoes! San Francisco mayor, Ed Lee, declared November 19th as the official Jeremy Fish day. Why didn’t this happen sooner? We cannot think of one other […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey – “Earth Crisis” @ Eiffel Tower (Paris)

Earlier today, Shepard Fairey (featured) revealed his latest installation (arranged by Gallery Itinerrance) that he entitled Earth Crisis, a giant sphere suspended between the first and second floor of the Eiffel Tower. The piece meant to draw attention to the global environmental crisis will be on view from November 20-26th and is timed to coincide with the World Conference on climate change COP21. Shep further states – “My political stance on protecting the planet is driven by my concern for the quality of life for future generations. I’m not an […]

Previews: Roland Tamayo – “Collection of Curiosities” @ Flower Pepper Gallery

This Saturday night (November 21st), Roland Tamayo (interviewed) will be opening up a joint show with Alex Louisa at Flower Pepper Gallery in Los Angeles. The timely choice of imagery from Tamayo, seeing as the new Star Wars movie opens soon, features his tasty-treat Star Destroyers, a perfect example of how the locally-based artist likes to draw inspiration from memories of his childhood. He further states – “These pieces are a collection of treats enjoyed by my sons, along with nostalgic treats from my childhood, connected by […]

Previews: Glenn Barr – “Hidden Persuasion” @ Inner State

Tomorrow night (November 20th) in Detroit, Inner State Gallery will be hosting the opening of Glenn Barr’s new solo show. Entitled Hidden Persuasion, the paintings from the locally-based artist this time have less of the surreal imagery he has been known for, but focuses in more on the cinematic quality of his work. He further states – “My new work in Hidden Persuasion is a tiny bit of a departure for me. In my past work, surreal manifestations inspired by the unconscious mind came to life. […]

Streets: Dotmasters // The Croydon Mural Project (London)

Recently in Croydon, Dotmasters took a couple weeks to finish two murals for the The Croydon Mural Project. Given two walls facing opposite of each other in the South London town, the British artist decided to continue his Toy Town series, first started years ago at Nuart in Stavanger, with a Ragdoll and Astroboy. The pieces seem to be a play on a well known graffiti term and are based on actual toys he owns. Photo credit: Ian Cox & the artist.

Previews: Ray Caesar – “Pretty Little Predators” @ Gallery House

This weekend in Toronto, Ray Caesar (interviewed 2011, 2013) will be hosted by Gallery House as he unveils works he has created for a new solo show entitled Pretty Little Predators.
