Preview: Brian Viveros & Dan Quintana – “Desensitized 13” @ Copro Gallery

Those who attended the SCOPE Art Fair during Art Basel Week in Miami will have gotten a preview already of Brian Viveros’ (featured) & Dan Quintana’s joint showing opening tomorrow night at Copro Gallery in Los Angeles. Desensitized 13 reprises their collaborative efforts back in 2010 three years later with new work that will give their fans a chance to see a further refinement and evolution of their style. Basel Week Miami ’13: “Affordable Care” @ Mana Wynwood

One of the shows we visited during Art Basel Week was Affordable Care, curated by Flaunt Magazine. Held in the Mana Wynwood complex in Miami’s downtown district, this group exhbition explores the contradiction of the words “affordable” and “care”. This pairing of terms in the current world is sort of an oxymoron in a time of digital missives, healthcare glitches, and artistic free-for-all. The event brought together an interesting mix of artists working with diverse mediums, including photography, digital, performance art. The participants were Ben Jones, Melanie Pullen, […]

During Art Basel Week in Miami the Yo <3 305 Gallery in Wynwood brought together the work of seven muralists from around the world for a Fordistas collective exhibition entitled The Art of Collaboration: Friends and Family. Known for their large scale public works they created worldwide, this was the first time they had the opportunity to “meld their individual talents into a cohesive whole within a single space.” The collective is made up of 2501, 2 Alas, Axel Void, Alexis Diaz, Jaz, Jufe, and Pastel, who joined forces to “present a show that […]

Streets: Sam3 (Barcelona)

Spanish artist Sam3 recently visited Barcelona where he created a new beautiful mural titled Park. Rendered with his familiar technique of using only black color and painting silhouettes, this public piece feels both very light and strong, fitting perfectly to the environment it is placed in. The piece shows four trees whose treetops form heads which communicated with each other with birds flying from one tree to the other. With a closer look, one notices that the leaves of the treetops are actually little birds […]

Opening: Finok – “Despacho” @ Smith Galeria

As mentioned previously in our preview, young Brazilian artist Finok, member of the infamous Vlok crew, recently opened an exhibition in his hometown of Sao Paulo. Hosted by Smith Galleria, Despacho is not only his first big solo show in Brazil, but also his most coherent and complex show to date. Finok spent a big part of the year working on the pieces for the mostly sold-out show, and as evidenced by the positive response from local and worldwide art lovers, all the time and effort put […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Art Miami & CONTEXT

As we continue our survey of Art Basel Week in Miami, we turn our eyes to Art Miami and its sister fair CONTEXT. The combined exhibition space of the two events featured over 190 galleries and covered over 200,000 square feet. Strolling through the booths, we found artist new and old that drew our attention. As with last year, there was the controversial display of un-authenticated work purported to be from Banksy presumably from his recent art residency in New York. Enjoy more of our photos below… Discuss Art […]

Following up on some of the walls in-progress that we showed you last week for the Women on the Walls in Miami for Art Basel Week, we now have photos of some of the completed murals and work. The surrounding area and the Wynwood Walls compound were beautified by visiting artists including Aiko, Miss Van, Fafi, Maya Hayuk, Lady Pink, Faith47, Kashink, Lakwena, Sheryo and Olek (seen above). We’ll be bringing you a closer look at more public works that went up this year but for now, peruse more of the photos for this particular project below… […]

Openings: John Brophy – “Breaking The Spell” & Femke Hiemstra – “The Timid Cabbage” Book Release @ Roq La Rue

While most were focused on the art bonanza in Miami, Roq La Rue favorites John Brophy and Femke Hiemstra, shared an open with new works at the Seattle gallery. John Brophy continues to hone his craft, mixing science symbology with religious iconography in Breaking The Spell. Added to the mix this time around are a few individual themes, like the world’s water supply in Oasis, and the companies that produce supergerms, which are literally slapped across a mesmerizing face in Birth of the Gram-Negative Venus. […]
