Signings: Mark Ryden – “The GAY 90s & Pinxit” @ PK Shop

At the beginning of the month, AM paid the PK Shop a visit to attend the signing of two monographs from Mark Ryden. The newer of the two, The Gay 90s, published by Rizzoli, illustrates the works included Ryden’s 2010 exhibition The Gay 90s: Old Thyme Art Show at Paul Kasmin Gallery (covered) while Pinxit by Taschen is a more comprehensive overview of the low brow luminary’s paintings organized by the themes of his major exhibitions. Frieze Week NYC ’13: Frieze Art Fair – First Look

Frieze returned to New York City this weekend, and again put on an top-notch art fair that challenges the dominance of The Armory Show. Like last year, the event was held on scenic Randall’s Island and featured many of the world’s most respected galleries and artists. We visited the fair multiple times over the weekend, and will post about specific booths that caught our eye. But first, here’s a general overview of some of what we enjoyed from Frieze NYC 2013.

German photographer Nils Müller recently published his second book titled Vandals with the official release on the May 1st, which will be followed by a gallery show at Ruttkowski68 (Cologne, Germany) opening on May 24th. Similar to his last book Blütezeit, published back in 2008, this latest volume covers the rarely exposed lives of urban vandals, and is released in regular and limited edition (limited to 500 signed copies now available for pre-order). Showing: Ryan De La Hoz – ‘What New Mystery Is This?’ @ RVCA SF

Ryan De La Hoz has been grabbing our eye over the last couple of years and appreciation of his artwork has been building momentum rapidly recently. His current solo exhibition What New Mystery Is This? is showing at RVCA in San Francisco, and is accompanied by new window displays in the SF space by other artists we admire – Bill McRight and Ben Venom. Ryan’s work utilizes cut paper and found imagery with exquisitely detailed ink linework to create a wonderful blend of Op-Art fused with geometric assemblages. […]

Upcoming: Fuco Ueda @ Lower Akihabara

We haven’t seen a showing of Fuco Ueda’s work stateside for a while, but those in Japan have a chance to take in a new body of work when her show opens at Lower Akihabara. Her surreal and sometimes disturbing works have long enchanted us at AM, so those who will be in Tokyo on June 15th would be advised to make plans to see her paintings for yourself. The show looks to be explore the use of Chrysanthemum, a commonly reoccurring flower in her imagery. […]

Openings: José Parlá & JR – “Wrinkles of the City, Havana” @ Bryce Wolkowitz

Last week, the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York hosted the opening of JR and José Parlá’s collaborative showing entitled The Wrinkles of the City, Havana. The joint works were based on the time they spent in Cuba a year ago painting street murals together (covered) as part of JR’s continuing project Wrinkles of the City where he photographs senior citizens and pastes their portraits on the walls of city buildings.
