Update: Camille Rose Garcia

Camille Rose Garcia (interviewed) recently posted about a new project she is working on – an illustration for something McSweeneys Publishing is involved in. Along with some in progress pics, she also announced that today at Noon (Pacific Time), she will be releasing some prints and items (on her webstore) found from organizing around her studio. Installations / Previews: David Choong Lee – “Organic Updates” @ 111 Minna

Opening tonight (February 1st) in San Francisco at the 111 Minna Gallery will be a new showing from David Choong Lee. We last witnessed a large body of work (covered) from the SF-based artist back in 2010 in Los Angeles, and in comparison, this new exhibition Organic Updates will also feature more clusters and wall installations created with elements of graffiti, collage, and painting. This Saturday, February 2nd, Giant Robot 2 will be celebrating Chinese New Year early with their Year of the Snake group show. Featuring the work of Rob Sato, Aaron Woes, Jeremiah Ketner, Stella Hultberg, Luke Chueh, Deth P. Sun, Yoskay Yamamoto, Edwin Ushiro, Audrey Kawasaki, Andrew Hem, Saelee Oh, Mari Inukai, APAK, and more, the exhibition will put the legless one and its characteristics on display for art fans to enjoy. Streets: Miss Van (Brazil)

Street femme fatale and intrepid traveller Miss Van has been spotted in frolicking in Brazil, in particular getting up in Sao Paulo. While visiting friends like Zezao and Ciro Schu, she took time to paint one of her signature Poupee characters near an abandoned factory – one of her first outdoor pieces for 2013. Currently showing in Berlin is Ephemeral, a group exhibition (curated by Johann Haehling von Lanzenauer) held at a temporary space by Circleculture in collaboration with Pret A Diner in Berlin (you may remember their work with Lazarides in 2011). Preview: Victor Castillo – “Under Heavy Measures” @ Merry Karnowsky

This Saturday night (February 2nd) the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles will be home to a new solo show from Victor Castillo. Under Heavy Measures will consist of paintings on paper & canvas, sculptures, and sketches from the locally-based artist all created in the deceptively innocent style of illustrations for children’s stories. The untimely recent passing of Justin Van Hoy has had an huge impact on the artistic community he was associated with. The Los Angeles based gallerist, artist and designer sadly lost his long battle with cancer in November shortly after his book Milk and Honey: Contemporary Art in California was published.
